Every year, more than 26, 000 children arrive in Britain. We ask some new arrivals what they like best about their new lives and what’s different from home.
Jarek, Poland | I don’t know anybody from Poland here, but I’m lucky because the English boy next door is very friendly and kind. We are in the same class! I like teachers here. At home, the teachers seem a bit strict and serious. There are a lot of rules, too. Here, teachers are patient and don’t give much homework. We students go out of school and buy pizza or burgers at lunchtime. We can’t do that in Poland. |
Zinah, India | It’s too cold here! I hate doing sports, especially outside in winter. The teacher here is very serious about sports. I prefer science and maths. I love the maths class because the teacher is really funny, just like my maths teacher in India. The school is so big and some students seem unfriendly. I’m from a small village school. I think it’s hard to communicate with them. |
Daisy&Luck, the USA | My sister and I like living here best. It’s cool! My sister loves the British accent (口音). Everybody here is very polite. But we don’t understand all your strange words—we say “yard” not “garden” and “apartment” not “flat”. The food is better here. There are Chinese, Indian and Thai foods. At home we eat too much fast food. |

The story from the prisoner:
When I was young, one day my mother brought several apples, among which there was a biggest red one that I really wanted to get. My mum put all the apples on the table and asked us, “Which do you like?” I was about to say “the biggest one” while my brother took one step ahead and said what I wanted to say. My mum said angrily, “A good child should give the best to others instead of being self-centered.” I learnt a quick lesson and said, “Mum, give me the smallest one. The biggest one should be left for my brother!” Hearing my words, she felt more than happy and gave the biggest apple to me as a reward.
I told a lie but I got what I wanted! Since then, I learnt to lie. Later, I learnt to fight, steal and rob. I would try all means to get what I wanted. Then later I was
The story from the White House:

If we agree that education is used to prepare us for life, then there is very little time to waste. So, while we can, we should teach children something really useful.
Politeness is a mark of civilization(文明). The sooner children learn this, the better.
Like it or not, our adults work hard for money, but we don’t make an effort to teach children how to manage it. So our schools have a duty to teach them this ability from the beginning.
We’re likely to accept something we are told, but that’s not what educated people do. Educated people are reasonable(理性的) and they look at facts.
All of us are part of society. We have rights and duties.
In a word, our schools should spend every moment they have telling this to our children: “This is life, this is what you are going to face, and this is how you deal with it.”
A.Children should learn to take care of their health. |
B.We should understand what they are. |
C.Here is what our school should teach. |
D.In any case, a lot can be achieved by a smile and good manners. |
E.So our school have a duty to teach them how to make money. |
F.If our schools teach nothing else, they should at least teach critical(批判性的)thinking. |

For as long as we can remember, one of the most popular ways parents use to punish their children has been the “time out”.
It seems that it is a good idea: the child sits on his own to reflect(反思)on what he has done. Then, when the time is up, he will apologize and learn from the mistake.
However, just because it’s something that’s been done for years, that doesn’t mean it is the right thing to do.
What can parents do to change this situation? You may have already heard of things like peaceful parenting(育儿)and gentle parenting. These focus on the relationship between parent and child through building trust and love.
As we all know, punishment and violence(暴力)seldom work and will never teach the children what the right way to act is.
A “time in” may take more time, but it does work.
根据短文内容,从下列选项中选出能填入文中空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。

C.During a “time out”, a child is told to stay outside and make a promise. |
