Singer Han Hong took action to help Wuhan, the city at the center of the coronavirus outbreak (新冠病毒爆发). Han Hong had planned to hold the first concert of her 2020 national tour in Wuhan on February 29th. But she called off the show and called on people to donate (捐赠) to the city. Soon over 2 billion yuan was donated through Han Hong Love Charity Foundation which she founded in 2012.
“When you’re going through a situation like this, you want to do anything you can to help. There are so many kind people out there,” wrote a fan, who donated through Han’s foundation. “It’s good to know that there are trucks with medical things going straight to the hospital. They are badly needed.” In 2008, Han held a charity performance for Wenchuan, Sichuan Province, after an earthquake. That inspired her to found her foundation. Over the years, she had donated to people in different disasters, including an earthquake in Yushu, Qinghai Province, in 2010, a huge mudslide (泥石流) in Gansu Province and an earthquake in Yunnan Province in 2013.
“I almost spent all my savings. That’s what I want to do and what I can do.” Han said in an interview on the online show, in 2015. “Many people don’t trust charity organizations to use their donations properly. Charities are held at a higher standard and need to win people’s trust.” The show also reported that Han had helped over 200 orphans (孤儿) since 1999.

Han Qian, worked to recruit volunteers (招募志愿者) for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. Fourteen years ago, he was a volunteer at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
“It’s my pleasure to take part in the two Olympics,” said Han. “Being a volunteer is different from organizing (组织) them, though both are great experiences. Organizing needs more thinking and planning, especially as we’re facing many new difficulties.”
Because of COVID-19, volunteers needed to be quarantined (隔离) before February 4th. This meant they had to give up more time for this job. As around 90% of the volunteers were university students, this could influence their schoolwork. So Han’s team worked together with schools to support the students as much as they could.
Han’s team also worked with schools to recruit students. “For example, volunteers from Tsinghua University work in the National Stadium, while those from Peking University take care of the National Aguatics Center,” Han said.
The cold weather was another difficulty, as some games were held outdoors. The outdoor volunteers needed to be trained, like 15-kilometer walks, to prepare for their work. The organizing group also provided hats, warm coats and other useful things for them.
“Many volunteers have developed interest in winter sports because of this experience,” Han said. “I’ve seen them post pictures of themselves skiing and skating. I’m happy that the volunteering experience is rewarding for them.”
