A businessman (商人) was once deep in debt (债务) and could see no way out. He sat on a park bench, head in hands, wondering if anything could save his company.

Suddenly an old man appeared in front of him. “I can see that something is troubling you”, he said. After listening to the businessman’s story, the old man said, “I believe I can help you.”

He asked the man his name, wrote out a check and pushed it into his hand, saying, “Take this money. Meet me here exactly one year from today, and you can pay me back at that time.” Then he turned and disappeared.

The businessman saw in his hand a check for $500,000, signed by John D. Rockefeller, one of the richest men in the world.

“It can solve my problem!” the businessman realized. But instead, he decided to put the check in his safe. “Just knowing it was there might give me the strength to work out a way to save my business,” he thought.

With renewed optimism, he negotiated (协商) better deals and extended terms of payment. He closed several big sales. Within a few months, he was out of debt and making money once again.

Exactly one year later, he returned to the park with the check. At the agreed-upon time, the old man appeared. But just as the businessman was about to hand back the check and share his success story, a nurse came running up and caught the old man.

“I’m so glad I caught him!” she cried. “I hope he hasn’t been bothering you. He’s always escaping from the hospital and telling people he’s John D. Rockefeller.” And then she led the old man away by the arm.

The businessman just stood there, surprised. All year long he’d been wheeling and dealing, buying and selling, believing he had half a million dollars behind him.

Suddenly, he realized that it wasn’t the money, real or imagined, that had turned his life around. It was his newfound self-confidence that gave him the power to achieve anything he went after.

What would you do if your best friend and you have different ideas? At first, I didn’t know what to do when I found that my best friend Karina disagreed with me on some things.

We met in a summer camp last year, and we got along so well then. But then something happened at a picnic. “Do you know about the shopping center news?” asked one of our friends Levar. “They want to cut down lots of trees to make room for a shopping center.”

“That’s terrible! We have to stop that,” I said.

“Jenny, I disagree with you,” said Karina. “The shopping center would give new jobs to people there.”

“But animals would lose their homes!” I said. “I want people to have jobs, but it doesn’t mean cutting down trees.”

I wished Karina could agree with me about saving trees, but she had her reasons for believing what she did. The two of us were so angry that we didn’t talk to each other for days.

Later, my mother knew it and said to me, “Not everyone has the same ideas. You should respect each other. And no matter what happens, the difference doesn’t mean losing a good friend.”

After listening to my mom’s words, I said sorry to Karina and we are still good friends again.

A salt seller used to carry big bags of salt on his donkey’s back as he made his way to the market every day. On the way there, they had to cross a river. One day the donkey took a sudden fall into the river. The big bags of salt also fell into the water. The salt seller didn’t notice, but some of the salt dissolved (融化) in the water, making the bags much lighter to carry. The donkey realized this and felt much more comfortable on his way to the market. The next day, the donkey did the same thing. But this time he fell in the water on purpose. Again the bags were lighter and easier to carry.

The salt seller soon found out what was going on and decided to teach his donkey a lesson. The next day, he put two big bags of cotton (棉花) on the donkey’s back. Again the donkey played the same trick, hoping that the bags would become even lighter. But instead the cotton became very heavy to carry. The donkey learned a lesson and didn’t play this trick any more after that day. Sometimes we might like to take shortcuts or cheat when we had a lot of hard work to do, however, taking shortcuts and cheating will often come back to harm us later.

John could not take it any more, handed in his resignation (辞职书) to the boss and complained the boss did not know how to delegate (任命) and did not value hard-working staff, but only promoted those who flattered (讨好) him.

John agreed. The boss asked him to go and find out anyone selling watermelons in the market. John went and returned soon. He said he had found out a man selling watermelons. The boss asked how much per kg? John shook his head and went back to the market to ask and returned to tell the boss $1.2 per kg.

The boss told John to wait a second, and he called Bobby to come to his office. He asked Bobby to go and find anyone selling watermelons in the market. Bobby went, returned and said, “Boss, only one person selling watermelons. $1.2 per kg, $10 for 10 kg, he has inventory of 340 melons. On the table are 58 melons, every melon weighs about 2 kg, bought from the south two days ago, they are fresh and red, good quality.”

John said nothing but lost in thought…
