The Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-sweeping(扫墓) Day, which falls on April 4—6 each year, is one of the Chinese Twenty-four Solar Terms(节气). From that date, temperatures begin to rise and rainfall becomes more. It is an important time for farmers to plant seeds(播种) in the fields. So the festival has a close relationship with farm work. However, it is not only a seasonal symbol, but also a day of remembering the dead. A lot of families would visit the tombstone to sweep the tombstones, and burn spirit money to remember the dead. Qingming Festival is also a time for people to do some other activities.
Spring outing
Qingming is the best time for Taqing, or a spring outing. People always go out and enjoy the early flowers before summer. It is a fine time to enjoy the beauty of nature during the festival.
Swinging
Swings are very popular among children and are usually found on playgrounds. As a popular custom on Tomb Sweeping Day, swinging not only stops the coldness from eating cold food, but also develops a child’s bravery.
Kite Flying
Flying kites is also an important custom enjoyed by many people, young and old, during the Qingming Festival. In the past, people cut the string(线) to let the kite fly freely. This custom is believed to bring good luck and get rid of illness.
