One day, I happened to meet an Englishman in a store and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be very surprised, gently shaking his head and saying, “You don’t say! You don’t say!” I was puzzled(困惑的), and I thought, “Perhaps this is not a right thing to talk about.” So I said to him, “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? Have you ever been there?”
“Certainly. When I’m back home, everyone will laugh at me if I leave here without seeing it. The Great Wall is wonderful!” he answered.
“Yes, it is one of the wonders in the world. And people from all over the world have come to visit it,” I added. As I was telling him more about it, he said again, “You don’t say!”
I couldn’t help asking, “Why do you ask me not to talk about it?”
“Well, I didn’t ask you to do so,” he answered, greatly surprised.
“Didn’t you say ‘You don’t say!’?” I asked again.
Hearing this, the foreigner laughed loudly. He began to explain. “‘You don’t say!’ means ‘Really?’. Perhaps you know little about English idioms(习惯用语).”
Wow! How foolish I was! Since then I have been careful with English idioms.

Mouth is an important part of our body. When we eat food, talk with others, sing and smile, we use our mouth. Also, when learning English, we can find the word “mouth” in many sentences.
In everyday life, if someone says something bad about us, we can say “Do not bad mouth me” to talk back. Sometimes, if we say bad things that make others feel sad. we can say, “Sorry, I really put my foot in my mouth this time.” We can also use “I am down in the mouth” to tell others our unhappiness. Sometimes when we talk with a friend and we have the same ideas with him, we can say, “You take the words right out of my mouth!” If some people have lots of money because of their rich families, in English, we can say, “They were born with a silver spoon in mouth.” But a person who lives “from hand to mouth” is very poor and only has money to buy some cheapest things in need.
From the above examples, we can see that even the same English word can be used in different situations (情形)to tell others different feelings. English is a great language, isn’t it?

In the US, “ give me five” or “ give me the high five” is a popular gesture ( 动作 ). You can see it often in films or on TV. It means the clapping ( 拍 ) of each other’s raised right hands together.
People do it when they meet for the first time or something happy happens. For example, a student has good marks in exams or wins a lottery ticket ( 彩票 ). If a football team wins a game, the players will give high fives to everyone around to celebrate.
This gesture may come from the old Roman gesture of raising the right arm for the king. This showed that the person raising his arm did not have a sword ( 剑 ) in his hand.
