China is one of the largest cotton producers in the world. In 2020, China produced more than 5,910,000 tons of cotton from National Bureau of Statistics (国家统计局) , almost 3,000,000 tons more than America, the third largest cotton producer. Most of China’s best cotton come from Xinjiang. Last year, Xinjiang produced 5,160,000 tons of cotton, almost 87% of the whole country.

Why can Xinjiang grow the best cotton? Because cotton needs lots of heat and plenty of sunshine to grow. And Xinjiang has lots of sunshine—about 3,000 hours every year. Long-stapled cotton (长绒棉) is the most famous cotton in Xinjiang. It’s also one of the best kinds of cotton in the world.

Its fibers are longer, softer and whiter than those of other cotton. And it’s warm and comfortable. So it’s good for making cloth and quilts.

Every year, after the harvest season, the fresh cotton goes to the textile factories (纺织厂) nearby. There, the cotton is made into cloth and quilts.

Think of space! What comes to mind? No, I’m not talking about planets or aliens. I’m talking about the space we live in! The world is full of different space. We can think about space in three different ways: public space, private space and personal space.

PUBLIC SPACE

Public space is social space for everyone to get together. It belongs to everyone. But wait! Before you camp in your local park or throw a party at a library, remember that there are rules. The rules are set to keep space clean and safe.

PRIVATE SPACE

Private space is for our own. We all need the space like homes, where we can relax and stay alone. We are not allowed to enter private space freely.

PERSONAL SPACE

This is the space where we sit and stand. Everyone feels different about their personal space. People may feel uncomfortable or angry when someone they don’t know gets too close.

We should respect (尊重) all the space. We should respect public space. We can’t leave a mess or take anything that doesn’t belong to us. It’s important to leave no trace (痕迹) in public space. We should respect private space by asking for permission before entering. And we should respect personal space by finding out how much space a friend or classmate needs to feel comfortable. Respecting all the space helps make us better people. It also helps keep our community safe and fun.

A special spoon for astronauts

Nikolas Grafakos has made a special spoon which can help astronauts eat more easily in space. It will be important during long trips to Mars.

Astronauts use normal spoons now. The spoons are just a little bit longer. It is not easy for astronauts to eat with them at zero gravity (零重力状态). The food must be wet and mushy so that it can stick to the spoon.

However, the new spoon is something between a spoon and chopsticks. Astronauts can hold it in their hand and press the end of it. Then the food will stay on the spoon. It is easier to put food in their mouth.
