The traditional Chinese Longtaitou Festival, or Dragon-Head-Raising Festival, is on the second day of the second lunar(农历的) month every year, and shows the start of spring and farming. This year it is on February 24.
Ancient people believed that after this day, rainfall(降雨量) increases because the Dragon King has woken from his winter sleep. A well-known phrase goes. “Er yue er, long tai tou,” meaning, “On the second day of the second month, the dragon raises his head.”
The most famous tradition on this day is getting a haircut. People believe that it can help throw away bad luck.
During the festival, foods are quite special. People eat chengyao cakes, made with rice, during the festival in Suzhou, where a saying goes, “If you cat chengyao on Longtaitou, your waist(腰) won’t hurt all year.”
At the same time, other foods, like noodles, dumplings, and popcorn, get their names from dragon body parts. Noodles are dragon’s beard (long xu), dumplings are dragon’s ears (long er), and popcorn dragon seeds (long zi).
