Nick is my pen pal. He is 12 years old. He is from Canada. He lives in Ottawa. He speaks English and French. His favorite subject is art. He likes Chinese, too. He likes swimming best. He goes swimming on weekends with his father. He doesn't like maths, he thinks it is too difficult.

Nick has a big family, his grandpa, grandma, father, mother and his brothers and sisters. He has two brothers and two sisters. They are Bob, Tim, Jane and Susan. They are happy!

Wei Dongyi was born in 1991. He is from Jinan, Shandong Province. When he was 19 years old, he went to Beijing University(大学). However, he didn’t take the “gaokao” because he twice won gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad(国际数学奥林匹克赛) while he was a high school student.

Now, Wei Dongyi is an assistant professor(助理教授) at Beijing University. He is popular on the Internet because of his talent(才能) for math. He usually holds a big bottle of water and a bag of steamed bread(馒头). He is shy of speaking. He and other university teachers look different.

In a video, a reporter asked Wei to say something to high school students who would take the national “gaokao”. He just said, “Welcome to Beijing University. I don’t know what else to say.”

Zhang Yonghua, a math teacher at Wei’s old high school, believes Wei is a math genius(天才). He does well in math and works hard. He often found better ways to work out(解决) math problems than his teachers, Zhang said.

①Nowadays, some schools teach traditional subjects like math, geography, and language, but they also teach life skills. Life skills classes teach students how to keep their rooms clean and tidy, take care of their health, and have healthy personal relationships. Students should only pay attention to how to get into university. What do you think?

②Some people like the idea of teaching life skills in schools. They believe life skills classes give students what they need to know to live on their own, such as cooking a meal and managing money. Many of these classes also teach “soft skills”, like how to listen and talk to people in a positive (积极的) way.

③They think as students learn more life skills, they become more confident in themselves.

④On the other hand, some students don’t agree to take these classes. They believe that there is no time for more subjects at school. They think it’s more important to teach traditional subjects than life skills at school.

⑤Besides, many students choose not to take life skills classes because these classes don’t improve their chances of getting into university. They also think it should be the job of parents to teach them what they need to know at home.

⑥Personally, I think we already learn many life skills while doing traditional subjects. For example, we learn teamwork by doing group work, and organizing our homework teaches us how to use our time well. I believe all schools should teach life skills. This will make sure that students are better prepared for college and work when they leave school.
