In a country where 1. 3 billion people speak 22 officially-recognized languages and hundreds of dialects (方言), communication online can be a problem.
Although there is a rapid rise in the number of Indian internet users who don’t speak English as the first language, 60% won’t shop online because of language problems.
Niki, a voice-enabled e-business app, is trying to solve this. It helps people to use voice commands (指令) to do shopping online. Users speak to the app in their preferred language, ordering products. Niki then presents buying choices from its product providers.
The company’s goal market is people who don’t live in cities and do not speak English In the northern Indian state of Rajasthan, the app has been used for more than 10 million online transactions (交易) since 2018. Now Niki can offer people service in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and English. The company is planning to introduce seven more languages, and hopes to carry out its business in 10 more states.
Thanks to a machine learning algorithm (算法), Niki is able to understand languages better and better. When the app first appeared, the algorithm only had a 65% accuracy (准确) rate. Now, it can deal with voice commands with 95% accuracy because of a bank of over 250 million conversations, Jaiswal says.
The app differs from typical online marketplaces. It limits the number of buying choices. Rather than offering many similar products as the supermarkets do, Niki presents a few quality - controlled objects from providers. That is more like a la sore.
When users speak to Niki in their native language, the app speaks back in the way of neighborhood shopkeeper. This “culture of service” is popular with many Indian people.
