Northern California’s wine country attracts millions of tourists in the harvest season each year. But harvest season now comes at the same time as another yearly event: wildfires.
In three of the past four years, wildfires have destroyed parts of the world-famous area. Last month, firefighters were still fighting against a fire in Napa Valley because of hot, dry, windy weather.
Still, most of the countryside, winemaking factories and tasting rooms that bring wine lovers to Northern California have escaped harm. But the frightening mental pictures of the area in flames stop people from making long-term plans to vacation here. Visitors don’t want to take a risk and are rethinking their plans to visit the area. So locals who depend on the tourist economy (经济) have been rethinking their marketing plans.
Knowing the fall season has become an undependable time to visit, tourism officials have launched campaigns (活动) to get visitors from far away to plan for winter or spring. During those seasons, wild flowers are everywhere and the area is less busy. Online, an organization is marketing the Cabernet wine season, which runs from November to April. And for fall, Sonoma County Tourism wants to attract visitors nearby because they can make last-minute plans.
“Napa remains beautiful, the wineries (酒庄) are open again and people are here”, said the manager of a local hotel. “The best way people can support us is to come visit, drink the wine and have a lovely time. Just be sure to call ahead.”

Travel makes us happy. It not only helps us relax, but also makes us learn more about the world. However, COVID-19 brought tourism to a stop in many places. But we got a lot of fun by turning travel to “Cloud Touism”.
“Cloud Tourism” is a kind of “at-home” tourism. It shows visitors around the tourist attractions (旅游景点) online. Without leaving home, people can join in the fun of travelling.
Now, “Cloud Tourism” is taking off in China. More and more Chinese people are interested in this new way of travelling. At the same time, more tourist attractions are starting to use “Cloud Tourism”. It is helping China’s tourism industry take a turn for the better. For example, a mini program called “Yunyou Dunhuang” went online in 2020. Through it, people can get close to the famous Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟) without going there. More than 5 million people visited the mini program in the first ten days after it appeared on the Internet. “Cloud Tourism” is bringing lots of joy to people at this special time. Madolline is from Australia. Over the past few years, she has traveled to many cities in her country and in the US. And she has spent very little on these trips. How did she manage to do this?
Well, Madolline grew up with cats and has always been a “big cat fan.” In 2017, she discovered a pet sitting website. She started looking on it for jobs in different cities. “As a pet sitter, you help your customers take care of their pets,” she explains. “In return, you get to live in their homes for free.”
Madolline spends about 30 minutes a day caring for her customers’ cats. “I’m usually asked to feed the cats twice a day. I also need to change their water and clean their litter boxes every day or two,” she said. She sends her customers two or three photos or videos of their pets each day. This is to tell them the latest condition of their pets.
Madolline will also do other simple tasks for her customers if they need. These tasks include collecting mail and taking out the rubbish. In the rest of the time, she is free. She can tour the city she is in.
