Too much screen use is bad for people’s health and almost half of parents are worried about their kids’ screen time. A big smartphone maker has introduced new technology to stop children from spending too much time on their phones.

Apple’s new smartphone tool came after a lot of people said that the Apple company was not doing enough to stop kids and grown-ups from becoming addicted(沉溺)to their iPhones.

The new app, called Screen Time, records how long people spend looking at their phones and sends people weekly reports about their time with screens.

Parents will be able to control their children’s use of smartphones. They can set daily time limits(限度)on each app. When the time runs out, the phone shows a message that "It’s time to move on.

"Parents can get a report of the time their children are spending on apps, how often each hour they are picking up their phones and what is interesting them, " Apple’s Craig Federighi said. "With the help of this app, parents can make decisions about how much time they want their children to spend on phones each day. "

"The company’s new Screen Time tool was badly needed. Apple and all the other big tech companies surely have a social responsibility(责任)to help parents decide on the right smartphone use, " Dr. Joanne Orlando, a researcher in Western Sydney University, said.

She said the Screen Time reports could also help parents who spend too much time on smartphones. In this way, they can see whether they’re looking up from their screens often enough.

When you want to buy a new T-shirt, will you pick Nike or Li-Ning? It’s a choice between local and foreign brands (品牌). In fact, Chinese brands are now winning the hearts of people in China and abroad (国外).

Time magazine shows a list of the 100 greatest companies in the world. Some Chinese companies are on the list, such as Huawei, DJI and TikTok.

For a long time, “made in China” made people think of ugly or poor things. Now, more and more people have different ideas because things “made in China” are fashionable, well-made and cheap. And some of them are making the world different from what it once was. Here are some examples.

Technology

Huawei is the world’s second-biggest mobile phone company. Its mobile phones are used in more than 170 countries. Huawei is also a leader in 5G technology.

DJI has more than 70 percent of the world’s drone (无人机) market. It makes all kinds of drones.

Entertainment

What’s one of the most popular apps in the US? It’s TikTok. It’s said that about 50 million US users spend 45 minutes on it every day. People know it because its videos seem to be endless. It can recommend (推荐) videos based on your likes. But it’s not just a time-killer. People can buy things on it, too.

Fashion

Li-Ning, a Chinese fashion brand, got into the world market a few years ago. Its sportswear like hoodies (帽衫) and jackets sells well all over the world. However, Nike once said no to the cotton from Xinjiang, its market in China is becoming smaller and smaller.

Do you know how long it's been since mobile phones were first invented? On April 3,over 40 years ago,the first public call___________(make)from a hand-held wireless phone.

Martin Cooper,a US researcher at Motorola, made the call from a corner in New York City in 1973.

People were very surprised at the phone, Cooper remembered. "We caused a great stir," he said.

The phone was a big thing by today's standards-it weighed almost 1kilogram and was about 25 cm long. Now, mobile phones fit into the palm of your hand and weigh a little more than a lemon.

But back then, it was a huge advancement, especially when compared with the car mobile phones that had been in use since the 1940s.

A car phone weighed more than 13 kilograms and cost thousands of dollars. An owner had to drill(钻)a hole in the car just to fix it.

At that time,Cooper was competing with Joel Engel, the head of research at a rival wireless communications company. So,he made the first call to him.

“I told him,‘Joel,I'm calling you from a real cell phone',”said Cooper. “I thought I heard gnashing of teeth(咬牙切齿)at the other end,but he was polite. ”

Since that first call, billions of people around the world have owned mobiles.

Today, they are multifunctional(多功能的)with more and more features, like short text messages, cameras and MP3 players. And people can also use it to get online.

However,Cooper still believes the"original dream"of a true mobile phone call is not yet a reality. That is:being able to use a phone to call anyone frorm anywhere. Cooper's dream phone is so small that it fits behind his. ear and automatically(自动地)dials out when he thinks about calling someone. And when there is an incoming call,it tickles(使发痒)instead of ringing.
