Jack lived in a small house with his mother and younger sister, Anna. They were very poor and often did not have enough food. He was a hard-working boy. After school, he would work at shops. In the holidays, he would ask for small jobs on nearby farms.
On a Sunday afternoon, his little sister was hungry and she was crying. There was no food at home. So Jack made up his mind to help her finally even though he planned to go to the park and play with his friends at the beginning.
He wanted to get some food for his sister and he decided to go fishing. It was only about 10 minutes’ walk from where he lived. He sat by the lake, the hours were passing but Jack was not having much luck. He started to feel sad but said to himself, “I must never give up.”
Almost at once he felt a strong pull on the fishing line. It was a very large golden-red fish. He ran home and showed it to his mother and sister. They were both smiling when they saw the fish. When his mother went to clean the fish, she had a big surprise. Inside its body she found a gold coin. No one could tell how it had got there but everyone was happy.
