Jack lived in a small house with his mother and younger sister, Anna. They were very poor and often did not have enough food. He was a hard-working boy. After school, he would work at shops. In the holidays, he would ask for small jobs on nearby farms.

On a Sunday afternoon, his little sister was hungry and she was crying. There was no food at home. So Jack made up his mind to help her finally even though he planned to go to the park and play with his friends at the beginning.

He wanted to get some food for his sister and he decided to go fishing. It was only about 10 minutes’ walk from where he lived. He sat by the lake, the hours were passing but Jack was not having much luck. He started to feel sad but said to himself, “I must never give up.”

Almost at once he felt a strong pull on the fishing line. It was a very large golden-red fish. He ran home and showed it to his mother and sister. They were both smiling when they saw the fish. When his mother went to clean the fish, she had a big surprise. Inside its body she found a gold coin. No one could tell how it had got there but everyone was happy.

A long time ago, there was an emperor. He had a beautiful garden. In the garden, there was a little nightingale (夜莺) singing very beautifully.

One day the emperor heard about this little bird’s beautiful voice. He asked his guards to bring her to him. As soon as the emperor heard the nightingale’s voice, he said, “Put her in a golden cage, so she can stay and sing to me whenever I want to hear her.”

The little bird was so unhappy about being kept in the cage that she stopped singing one day. The emperor was very angry. He ordered the scientists in his palace to make a robot bird for him. The bird could sing very beautifully, too. The emperor was pleased.

Soon the robot bird became old. It no longer sang beautiful songs. Just at that time, the emperor became very weak. One morning, while lying in bed, the emperor wanted it to sing once again. But the robot bird couldn’t sing any more. Suddenly the nightingale landed on the window. She began to sing her most beautiful song. The emperor was very happy! He became better and better each day.

A blind(盲人)boy sat on the street with a hat by his feet. He held up(举起) a sign which said: "I am blind, please help." There were only a few coins (硬币) in the hat. A man walked by. He put a few coins into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by could see the new words. Soon the hat started to fill up(装满). That afternoon the man who had changed(改变) the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized(认出)his footsteps(脚步)and asked: "Were you the one who changed(改变) my sign this morning? What did you write?" The man said: "I only wrote the truth(真相). I said what you said but in a different way." His words were "Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it." Do you think the first sign and the second sign said the same thing? Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign only told people to put some money in the hat. The second sign told people that they could enjoy the day, but the boy could not enjoy it, because he was blind. The first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign reminded(提醒)people they were lucky that they were not blind. There are at least(至少) two lessons we can learn from this simple story. The first is: Be thankful for what you have.
