It was 8:00 am. A group of college students got out of my car to make a video in the park. My job, as the driver, was to stay nearby so that if they need something I could open the car.

I could have two or three hours’ free time, so I decided to go somewhere and do some reading. I found a beautiful park bench. I noticed that a man was sitting on one end, but there was plenty of room (空间) for more than two more bodies. Walking over, I sat on the end seat to have a rest.

The man on the other end looked at me but didn’t move. I quickly found that he may spend the night on the bench. His clothes were dirty, his hair was untidy, and soon I caught a bad smell of body sweat (汗水). I looked at him and smiled, and he smiled back with a mouth of blacked-out teeth.

We both sat there for over an hour quietly. I was reading. He was watching the video making. He then stood up, walked in front of me and bowed (鞠躬). In a little shaky but clear voice, he said, “Thank you.” I looked up at him.

“For what?” I asked in surprise.

He looked at the ground, “Usually people won’t even look at me, let alone sit by me. Thank you for treating me as a man.”

I really didn’t know what to say as he turned and walked quickly around the corner. I was surprised. I didn’t do anything special. I just shared a bench.

To me, he was just someone who wanted a place to rest. That’s exactly what I wanted. We were no different. I finally got to know that my actions truly meant (意味着) something to this poor homeless man. So, treating others in an equal (平等的) way can also make a difference to the world.

I have a 12-year-old son who is kind and helpful. And he is showing great interest in growing plants. I have been helping him plant flowers, vegetables and plants since spring arrived.

When planting a bunch of flowers one Saturday afternoon, I found that there were two flowers left in my son’s basket. My son decided to take them to the little house next door where an elderly woman lived by herself and didn’t seem to have much company. I watched him as he went up to her door, rather hesitantly（迟疑地）.

Because he didn’t know her, and he quietly left the flowers on her doorstep so that she would get them the next time she went outside.

The next morning we were happy to find that she had planted the flowers in a pot （陶盆）by the door. They looked really beautiful. Although it was a small thing, it was important as my son has learnt to do good for others. He said to me, “It feels really good to do things for other people.”

“Today I will give you a special test,” said the English teacher with a smile on his face.

All the students sat up straight and waited for the test to begin. The teacher began to give the test papers to all the students. After he finished handing out the test papers, he asked them to begin.

The students were very surprised to see that there was not a question but a black dot(圆点) in the center of the paper. The teacher noticed the students’ surprise and said, “I want you to write about what you see there.” At the end of the class, the teacher took all the students’ answer sheets and read the answers. All of them described the black dot. After reading all the answers, the teacher said, “Here everyone only paid attention to the black dot, but no one wrote about the white paper.” The whole class listened silently, because they were afraid to fail the exam. Then the teacher said, “Don’t worry about your marks for this test. I just want you to think about our life. The white paper is like our whole life and the black dot in the center of the paper represents(代表) problems in our daily life.”

Our life is a gift given by our parents, with love and care. However, we just pay attention to the problems like illness and poverty and never see happy things in our life. So we should try to solve our problems and enjoy each moment life gives us.
