Can you sing or dance? Do you ride a unicycle? Do magic tricks? Drink a glass of milk in ten seconds? Recite poems from memory? Well, you've got talent, my friend! And what better time to show it off than at the school talent show!
Middle school talent shows in the US happen every year. Whatever you're good at, you have five minutes to show the world. It's early in the school year, and kids can become little celebrities(名人). The shy boy who spends his evenings practicing Spanish guitar will surprise his classmates with beautiful music. The sporty girl on the soccer team will surprise the crowd with her sweet singing voice. Everyone has a chance to shine.
Almost anyone doing almost anything is allowed on a talent show, as long as your act isn't rude or illegal(违法的), it's a "go".
Of course, you must audition(试演) first, usually in front of a group of teachers. You will have a few weeks to practice your act and there will be at least one dress rehearsal(带妆彩排).
On the day of the show, all the students sit in the school gym, ready to cheer for the many skills of their classmates(and sometimes teachers, too).
Many of today's stars started their careers in school talent shows-Madonna, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake all showed their skills early in life. But, even if you're not Justin Bibber, you can become a star in your own right at your middle school talent show.

One day, Tom's teacher, Miss Mak held a class meeting. "There will be a flag day next Saturday. Does anyone want to join this meaningful event(活动)?" asked Miss Mak. Tom was interested in raising money for homeless children but he was not brave enough to talk to the strangers, so he kept quiet in his seat.
"Tom, you haven't sold flags before," said Miss Mak suddenly. "Would you like to have a try?" Tom was hesitant(犹豫的), but he finally nodded.
On the flag day, Tom and Angela sold flags in a busy street. "Excuse me, Could you please buy...?" said Angela softly to the first person she met. Feeling nervous, Tom began to shake. Soon, he saw a young lady walking towards him. The lady was smiling and holding a few coins in her hand. She asked, "Are you selling flags for Fund for the Homeless Children?" Tom's face became red and said yes. Then the lady made the donation(捐赠) and Tom gave her a flag. "You made it!" laughed Angela.
In the next couple of hours, Angela and Tom sold flags quickly and bravely. At last, their collection bags were so heavy that they had to hold them with both arms. They felt very proud.
