In the past, many students practiced English with their pen friends—they sent letters to people all around the world. However, we now send emails to others and chat with people who live quite far away on the Internet.
Here’s some advice on how to succeed in your online language exchanges (交流):
How to start a conversation when speaking English online? When you speak to somebody online, start by asking “Yes or No” questions. Use questions such as “Do you like...?” or “Can you...?” or “Have you ever...?”
Remember your goal. You are trying to learn about the other person. Think about things you enjoy and share your own experiences to find that you have similar interests. If you only ask questions, you will sound like a policeman or a policewoman!
How to keep a conversation going? Listen carefully. In that way, you can get to know somebody well. When you know him or her well, you will have more to talk about. Then ask follow-up questions. After you “listen”, use what you “hear” to learn more about that person. Use “open ended” questions, such as “What do you think of...?” or “What was the most interesting experience...?”
Besides, remember some basic rules for online language exchanges:
Be patient. Do not try to find a good friend right away.
Be careful. Don’t give any personal information on the Internet, especially your address, telephone number, and even your real name. It’s very dangerous.

The latest survey (最新调查) shows that 70% of teenagers in China are short-sighted (近视). The amazing (惊人的) number makes many people realize that we must take our eyes seriously.
Know more about eyes
First, eyes are very important for us. We can’t live a good life if we don’t have healthy eyes.
Second, eyes are the weakest (柔弱) part of our body. They got hurt easily and they need more protection (保护).
Learn the ways of eye protection
First, eat more food that is good for eyes.
Carrots, blueberries, tomatoes and fish are good for eyes. Because they’re rich in Vitamin A (维生素A) and Vitamin A is necessary for eye health.
Second, use eyes rightly.
Don’t read or write in poor or bright (明亮的) light because they cause eye tiredness (疲劳). Too much reading, writing, watching television or phones can also cause eye tiredness, so a good rest is necessary for eyes.
Third, exercise eyes every day.
Often look into the distance (远处) and move eyeballs in all directions (方向). Eye-caring exercises can also help to relax eyes.

The Cornell Note—taking System (CNS) is a way to take notes created by Walter Pauk in the 1940s. It’s a productive way of learning. The CNS can improve the quality of your learning experience, helping you make connections and get more knowledge in the shortest time.
Now, I’d like to introduce the five Rs of the CNS to you. They’re Record, Reduce, Recite, Reflect and Review. Before you use the CNS, however, you need to divide a clean piece of paper into three parts: Cue Column (线索栏), Note-taking Column and Summary (总结). Then, it’s time to take notes with five Rs.
➢ Step 1: Record.
During the class, write down as many meaningful facts and ideas as you can in the Note-taking Column. Don’t use complete sentences. It’s better to use key words or some special symbols, but make sure you know what they mean. And leave a space each line so that you can add more information later.

➢ Step 2: Reduce.
As soon after class as possible, summarize these facts and ideas in a few words in the Cue Column and then think about questions that might appear on the exam, and then write them down.
➢ Step 3: Recite.
Cover the Note-taking Column with a piece of paper and study the information by asking yourself questions in the Cue Column. Then, use your own words to answer these questions out loud.
➢ Step 4: Reflect.
Draw out opinions from your notes and use them as a starting point for your own reflections on the course and how it relates to your other courses. Reflect on the material by asking yourself some questions. And then use complete sentences to write a summary at the bottom of your notes.
➢ Step 5: Review.
This step can help reduce your stress of studying for exams. If you spend 10 minutes every week on a quick review of your notes, you will keep most of what you’ve studied in mind without staying up late for it.
Don’t let learning be a stress to you. Try to master the CNS instead.

I used to be the messiest (凌乱的) person alive. Over the years, through watching others and by trying again and again, I have finally found ways to come up with plans, organize them and follow through with them.
Make a general list of everything you need to have and do to make your plan happen. Make a list of all steps that need to be completed and think about what needs to be done.
Detail everything completely and read it over so you can start coming up with some good ideas of how to carry out your plans.
You should make sure that if, for some reason, way one doesn’t work, you have way two and way three to depend on. So, different ways are needed at hand. It’s just a matter of being organized. Chances are that there is always more than one way of doing things, and that if one of those ways doesn’t work, one of the others will.
Don’t try to solve more things all at a time. All that does is to slow your progress, take away your attention and make you lose your interest and energy.
Carrying out an effective (有效的) plan requires being as organized as possible. You will only achieve this by sticking to the order of the plan and not changing or trying to do more at a time.
Last but not least, you should never give up things halfway. It will only make everyone around you angry, including yourself. Unfinished plans are a waste of time, energy and, in some cases, even money.
So, don’t be afraid of organization. The older we get, the more necessary it becomes to have the skills to follow through with confidence and to be able to carry through plans in an organized and manageable way. It pays to be organized, after all.
