The geese are back

Canada geese do not live only in Canada. They spend spring and summer in Alaska(阿拉斯加加州)and northern(北方的)Canada. In autumn, many of the geese migrate(迁徙)to warmer places. They usually fly to northern Mexico(墨西哥), but lately many began to fly to the south of the USA. This may be because it is warmer there now than it was in the past.

Canada geese fly very fast. They can fly as fast as 100 kilometers per hour. The geese usually travel in groups of about 100, but groups of 1,000 are common. On cloudy days, the geese will fly lower, but on sunny days they can fly as high as 2,500 meters.

Canada geese know when to migrate by checking how long and how warm the days are. They also wait until the young geese learn to fly. When the day becomes shorter and the temperature(气温)gets lower, they know it is time to leave. This is usually at the end of August. A few days before leaving, all the geese get very excited. They start honking(雁叫)and making a lot of noise.

The Canada geese make a “V” shape in the sky when they fly south. This helps them fly more easily through the air. The first goose pushes through the air, and this makes it easier for the other geese to follow. Each goose takes a turn being the first goose.

No one is sure how the geese find their way. Some scientists think that geese use the stars at night to help them know where they are.

Do you know anyone born in the Year of the Tiger? What’s their personality like? Are they brave and strong? If so, then they are a typical “tiger”.

In Chinese culture, tigers are seen as the king of all animals. They stand for power, energy and protection. Tigers are seen as fearless animals, so that’s why in China you can see pictures of tigers on the walls of houses and temples to ward off (抵御) danger and disasters.

Tigers have an important cultural meaning not just in China, but across Asia where they live in the wild. For example, in South Korea, the animal is a symbol of justice, humanity and righteousness(正义)in local folk tales. Both the 1986 Seoul Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics used Hodori, a friendly cartoon tiger, as the mascot. A tiger is also on the logo of the South Korea national soccer team.

In the West, tigers are also seen as powerful animals. And we often use “tiger” in English. If we say someone “works like a tiger”, we mean he or she works hard. If you want someone to calm down, you can say to them “easy, tiger”. Another famous phrase is “eye of the tiger”, which means having strength. There are also some other phrases about tigers, such as “a tiger can’t change its stripes(条纹)”, “paper tiger” and “have a tiger by the tail”.

You may know that bees make delicious honey. But do you know that they keep us all alive?

Every year on May 20, it’s World Bee Day. It is a day to thank bees for all they do. Without bees, we wouldn’t have any food! When bees fly from plant to plant, they carry pollen (花粉). The pollen makes new plants grow. Bees not only help flowers grow. They also help fruit and vegetables grow.

It’s also a day to learn about the problems bees are facing. Losing natural living areas, getting sick from chemicals (化学物质) used on crops and higher temperatures are making the numbers of bees drop.

Now people have taken action like looking for technology to help save bees. One example is the robot bee project called Robo Royale. The project uses robot bees to help feed and look after the queen bee. This will make the queen lay (产卵、下蛋) more eggs and make more bees.

FUN BEE FACTS

●85 percent of the world’s flowering plants and about 35 percent of the world’s food crops depend on bees and other animals to grow.

●There are about 20,000 different kinds of bees found all over the world.

●Bees work all day for their queen. The queen is the biggest bee in the hive (蜂箱). She will lay 800,000 eggs in her life.

The ostrich is the largest bird in the world. It lives in nature in Africa, but people raise it all over the world for its meat.
The ostrich has long skinny legs, a big body with small wings, a long neck, and a dangerous long beak. Even though it has wings, it can’t fly. But they are sometimes useful. They help a lot with balance ( 平 衡 ) when the ostrich is running at full speed( 速 度 ) and needs to change directions. The ostrich usually weighs between 200 and 300 pounds and can grow to 9 feet tall. Its large body is covered with feathers.
The ostrich is famous for its speed on the ground. Its powerful legs help it reach speeds of 40 miles per hour! Ostriches can also use their strong legs to kick any enemy or even kill a man or a lion. However, the ostrich will just use its speed to run away from any danger most of the time.
Ostriches eat almost everything, such as plants, insects, and small animals like lizards. They often live in groups. A group will have around ten birds, but some groups even have 100 birds. This way the whole group can help to protect the eggs. Ostrich eggs are the biggest eggs of any animal.
In fact, ostriches don’t put their head in the ground often. What they really do is to lie down and put their head and neck flat on the ground to hide. You can just see their body far away, so it appears as if they have put their head in a hole in the ground. Ostriches can not only kick with powerful feet, but also the 4 inch long claws (爪) on their feet.
