Jerusha Abbott was walking to Mrs Lippett's office when she saw the back of a man. He casted a shadow on the hall. He had very long legs and arms and his shadow looked just like a daddy-long-legs spider. She turned pale and could hear her heart beating very fast, so she walked more quickly.       As Jerusha entered the office, Mrs Lippett immediately spoke, “Jerusha! "Did you see the gentleman who has just left?" "I only saw his back. " Jerusha replied. Mrs Lippett continued, "The gentleman only chose boys and offered them to college. But this time you were chosen." "To college! Me!" Jerusha was shocked. "In return, you must write a letter every month telling him of your progress. "

In the letters, Jerusha described everything that happened in her college to Daddy-long-legs. She met new people, made friends and even gave herself a new name, Judy.

May 4

Dear Daddy-Long-Legs,

We had a sports day last Saturday. It started out with a very cheerful parade. I couldn't wait to take part in the events. I have kept training hard for several weeks. I know it is very important on the way to my further dream. I must keep myself strong and active before it. And guess what? I won the fifty-yard sprint*. It was all very exciting and I felt so good at the end of the day.

I love you always, Judy

June 4

Dear Daddy-Long-Legs,

I have been very busy these days studying for my examinations. Once the examinations are finished, our vacation will be here. I am going to the seaside to tutor* a girl and her younger sister. I will teach them English and Latin. Each month, I will get fifty dollars! Please don't object to my plan. I am becoming very independent thanks to you. I hope that you have a wonderful summer, Daddy.

Yours always, Judy

Four days later

Dear Daddy-Long-Legs,

I was about to post this letter to you when I met Master Jervie. He has invited me to Europe as well. He said it was an important part of my education. I almost said yes. But one thing stopped me. He was almost trying to force me to go. I refuse to be forced to do anything, because I want to make my own decisions. To reply you for your kindness, I will become a wise and independent woman.

Yours ever,

Judy

C. Read the passage below and answer the following questions (根据文章内容回答下列问题)

I am Mari. I live in Flint, Michigan. About five years ago, our water began to smell funny. My family started getting really bad skin problems. My little sister needed special medicine. She wasn’t the only kid in Flint who got so sick. Some people suffered from bad headaches. Others had stomachache.

Across the city, people complained that something was seriously wrong with their tap water. Our water was polluted. We couldn’t drink or cook with the water from our tap. We had to use bottled water for drinking, cooking, and brushing our teeth. The only safe way to take baths was to heat up water from bottles.

In 2015, when I was 8 years old, I decided to speak up for the people of Flint. I wrote a letter to then-president Barack Obama to ask him for help. In response, he came to speak with our community. I got to meet him. But I wanted to do more.

My friends and family helped me start a campaign for Flint. Our goal was to raise S15,000. So far, we’ve collected $280,000!

For the past few years, I’ve been giving out bottles of water and new water filters (过滤器) to people in my city. Many people in Flint still can’t use their tap water.

I’ve also used social media to ask people around the world for help. I have more than 100,000 followers on the Internet, including famous people and regular people from different countries.

Most people now know me as Little Miss Flint. I’m proud that I am able to help my neighbors get clean water. I’ll continue until every single Flint citizen feels safe drinking the water from their taps. I also want people to realize that Flint isn’t the only place with water issues. It’s important for us all to ask questions about what’s in the water at school and at home.

My goal is to run for U.S. president in 2044 — as soon as I’m old enough. But you don’t have to be an adult to change the world. It starts with helping out in your own community. You have a voice and the ability to make that voice heard. Don’t let anyone stop you.

Walking for charity

Two Americans Stephen and Andersen went on a 190-day charity walk across the US to raise money for the Purple Heart Fund, a charity providing military veterans(老兵) with financial support and more.

Both at the age of 24, they live in the eastern state of Delaware. Stephen is a US Marines veteran. Andersen recently graduated from college. They have been best friends since childhood. They both like travelling and have a strong desire(愿望) to see the country. So when Stephen proposed(提议) this cross-country journey, Andersen agreed with no hesitation(犹豫).

On Wednesday evening, March 1, the two men started off from their hometown, heading west against a cold wind with large bags on their backs.

Every day they walked about 40 kilometers. They never knew for sure where they would sleep until it got close to sunset. They mostly slept outdoors, but every now and then they would stay in a hotel to relax for a few hours.

Luckily, many strangers along the way offered them meals, smiles, and a place to sleep at night. A man called Dimitri Olympidis even offered them a ride, but they refused. They said they preferred to walk.

By September 6, they ended their trip on the west coast in San Francisco, the state of California, raising about 300,000 dollars from lots of nice people and the local businesses.

“The people we’ve met along the way have been great,” Stephen said at an interview, “We’re grateful for even the smallest contributions to our cause. It’s people like them that truly make this trip worth it.”
