During the COVID-19, Americans are afraid of possible shortages of products so the supermarket shelves become empty. However, one nutritionist says healthy eating shouldn't be influenced by the COVID-19.

"There is no need to store the food because there are plenty of food supplies in the United States," said Diane Rigassio Radler, director of the Institute for Nutrition Interventions at Rutgers University, in New Jersey.

"However, it is a good idea to have plenty of food at home to reduce the number of times you have to go to the supermarket," she added. "When you go shopping, try to go at times when supermarkets are less crowded so that you can keep enough social distancing. Another choice is to go shopping online," she added. "Wash your hands as soon as you get home from the supermarket. Then unpack your bags. Wipe(擦) packaged foods with an alcohol-based(含酒精的)paper towel. If you have reusable bags, wash them if possible or wipe them with an alcohol-based towel," she advised.

Store some canned, frozen and dried non-perishable(干燥不易腐烂的)foods, but understand the differences. Canned foods last for years, but generally have a higher sodium(钠)content than the others. Frozen foods will last for months, but could go bad if the electricity supply can not be provided. Dried foods, including dried beans, pasta, and root vegetables (carrots and potatoes),are also good foods to have at home.

To improve immunity(免疫力)she also advised us to have less sugar and alcohol. A healthy diet with lots of fruit and vegetables and enough protein(蛋白质)and grains can help you improve your immunity, and lack of sleep can weaken your immune system.

Drink plenty of water. Try to get 150 minutes of exercise per week. Doing more exercise can make you stronger.

Understanding how much sugar and saturated fat (饱和脂肪) is in your drink can be confusing. Many of us end up having too much without realizing it. Saturated fat is often added into drinks to improve their “mouth-feel”. But having too much of both sugar and saturated fat can increase your risk of diabetes (糖尿病). Too much sugar can also lead to obesity (肥胖).

Nutri-Grade “grades” your drinks based on their sugar and saturated fat levels. Think of this as a score. Drinks graded “A” have the lowest sugar and saturated fat content, while drinks graded “D” have the highest.

Starting from the end of 2023, all drinks sold in Singapore must put a Nutri-Grade label (标签) on the drinks, according to sugar and saturated fat levels.

To manage your sugar and saturated fat intake, drink less Nutri-Grade C and D drinks and go for healthier choice or Nutri-Grade A or B drinks or simply choose water.

Do you think breakfast important? Last week, several students from Xingfu Middle School made a survey among 500 people on the streets. The diagrams below show the results.

It is good to see 65 percent of the people eat breakfast every day. However, some people seldom eat breakfast or don’t eat breakfast at all. People who don’t eat breakfast have different reasons. Most are too busy to have breakfast. 6 percent have no appetite (胃口). And a very small number of people think that eating breakfast is a trouble. They would rather sleep a little longer or relax than rise early to make breakfast. 16 percent don’t care. They have no reason for not eating breakfast.

Studies show that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It enables us to study and work better, giving us a fresh start. It is believed that the best time for breakfast is between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. There should be an interval (间隔) of 4 to 5 hours between breakfast and lunch. Before breakfast, we’d better drink some water. As you can know, our body loses much water after a whole night.
