As the old saying goes, “A hero is known in the time of misfortune (不幸)” Zhong Nanshan is a hero like this. He is a doctor in Guangdong, who saved many people’s lives in 2003.

In 2003, SARS (非典) broke out in Guangdong. Later, it spread across China and other parts of the world. Patients coughed a lot and got fevers. Hundreds of patients even died from the disease. So everyone was afraid of it. But Zhong was brave enough to fight against the disease. Zhong spent days and nights to find the cause of the disease. And with his way of treating, many patients began to get better. Zhong finally won people’s trust.

In early 2020, a disease called Novel coronavirus pneumonia (新型冠状病毒肺炎) hit Wuhan. It spread quickly. Tens of thousands of Chinese people were infected (感染). Zhong, 84, led his team to Wuhan to fight against the illness. He advised people to wear masks, wash hands frequently, stay at home and not to go to crowed places.

Zhong likes sports very much. When he was 68, he could still play basketball. Now at the age of 84, Zhong still treats patients in the hospital and teaches young doctors. “I am just a doctor.” Zhong says. But we think he is a hero and a fighter.

①Chinese people have got respect worldwide for their important achievements in medicine, showing their hard work, new ideas, and intelligence. This is clear in their progress from ancient times to modem surgeries (外科手术).

②Hua Tuo, an ancient Chinese doctor, was one of the first to use medicine during surgery to help patients feel less pain. Besides surgery, he was skilled in acupuncture (针灸) , traditional Chinese medicine, and special exercises.

③Victor Peter Chang, born in Shanghai in 1936, became a well-known heart surgeon. Inspired by his mother’s fight with cancer, he chose to be a doctor, studying medicine in Australia, the UK, and the US. He made big achievements in heart surgery and created man-made heart parts.

④Another important person is Charles “Charlie” Teo, an Australian-Chinese brain surgeon. His important work at the Center for Less Invasive Brain Surgery in Sydney has saved many lives.

⑤Nowadays, surgeons in China have made big steps forward, like using stem cells (干细胞) to treat very serious injuries (损伤) and doing quite difficult surgeries. Stem cells are cells that can turn into different kinds of cells. It is the first time this has been done anywhere in the world.

⑥Furthermore, Chinese surgeons successfully did a very new face transplant (移植) on a girl who had been badly burned. This made it possible for her to smile again and made her life much better.

⑦All in all, the work of Chinese surgeons and new medical ideas, both in and outside of China, give hope to people all around the world for getting better from many sicknesses and injuries.
