Scientists were studying sea turtles(龟) in Costa Rica. That is in Central America. One turtle had something sticking out of its nose. The turtle could not breathe. At first, the scientists thought it was a worm( 虫). They pulled it out. It was a plastic straw( 吸管). The scientists made sure the turtle was healthy. It came back into the water. The scientists posted a video of helping the turtle on the Internet. When people saw it, they were shocked. The video made Diana Lofflin start StrawFree.org. The group is in California. Its goal is to make people know the harm plastic straws take to the environment. Lofflin hopes people will find some things instead of plastic straws. “Straws are not necessary for enjoying a drink,” she says. “Saying no to a plastic straw is a way to make a difference in the world.”
Plastic rubbish washes into rivers and oceans when it rains. Fish and other animals eat the plastic. It can kill them. An activity to ban plastic straws is growing. In California, it isn’t allowed for food servers to give straws to customers who don’t ask for them. Nancy Wallace works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in Washington, D.C. She says schools should refuse to use plastic. Kids must do their part, too.

Scientists will put some robot fish into the sea near Spain this year. These robot fish will help people find out the pollution in the water. If the robot fish are able to finish their work successfully, the team of scientists hopes they can use the robot fish in rivers, lakes and seas around the world.
The robot fish are about 1. 5 meters long. There is a detector (探测器)in their bodies. It can find the pollution in the water, and then the robot fish will eat part of it.
They can “swim” for eight hours in the sea freely and send back information to people on the beach. After their power(电能) runs down, they will go back to the beach by themselves.
There are five robot fish altogether. Each costs about 29,000 dollars. They are part of a three-year project between the engineering company BMT Group and University of Essex in southeastern England.

D.The robot fish will find out the pollution in the water. |
A.They will eat some small fish. |
B.They won’t tell people where they are. |
C.They will clean some of the polluted things. |
D.They will take other fish out to the beach. |
A.For five hours. | B.For eight hours. |
C.For twelve hours. | D.For one day. |

C.The pollution near Spain. | D.The work by the robots. |
As it is said above, cutting down on water usage is one of the most important things you can do for your local environment and the planet as a whole. That is why more green households are going blue: cutting down their water footprint by conserving and harvesting (收获) water.
It may seem like a big concept, but going green starts with small changes that everyone can make. Something as simple as turning off the tap while you brush your teeth can save a lot of water. Wash your fruits and vegetables in a bowl rather than under a tap to save even more. Make sure that the taps are fully turned off every time you step away from the sink or the shower - all those little drops can add up to a lot of water waste.
Another way of reducing your water footprint is reducing your dependence on the main water supply. Rainwater harvesting can meet a lot of your home's water needs. Many of us already practice rainwater harvesting in a small way. Collecting water from your gutters (檐沟) is a great way to keep your garden green without running the sprinkler (洒水器).
【小题1】The underlined word "green" means _______ in this passage.
A.未成熟的 | B.环保 | C.嫉妒 | D.健康的 |
A.Treating wastewater needs much energy. |
B.The water on the earth is becoming less and less. |
C.The water on the earth is becoming polluted more. |
D.Rainwater harvesting can meet a lot of your home's water needs. |
A.washing fruit and vegetables under a tap |
B.using a bowl to wash your fruit and vegetables |
C.making sure taps are fully turned off all the time |
D.turning off the tap every time after brushing your teeth |
A.Save Water by Turning off the Tap |
B.How to Treat and Clean Wastewater . |
C.Keep Your Garden Green with Rainwater |
D.Save Water Starting with Small Changes |
How green are you? Do you care about protecting the environment and saving energy? We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day and it does harm to our environment. Though we are young, we can still do something to help. In fact, even the simplest everyday activities can make a real difference to the environment. Here are some ideas for you. Remember these three words: Reduce, reuse and recycle.
REDUCE
Reduce means “use less.” Don’t waste things. This saves money and reduces pollution and waste going into the environment. Before we buy something new, think whether it is really necessary— or maybe the old one will be just as good! When we do buy things, choose local products (产品)if possible, and try not to buy too many things from abroad. It may cost a lot of money to bring them to us.
REUSE
Reuse means “use again.” Use things for as long as possible. When we buy things, make sure that they last a long time. We should look after them so that they will last, and we should repair them if we can instead of throwing them away and buying new ones. Don’t use a paper cup or a paper bag. It’s better to use a china cup and a lunch box because you can use them again.
RECYCLE
Recycle means “change things into something else.” Although it takes energy to change something into something else, it’s better than throwing things away or burning them. Find out what can be recycled in your neighborhood and take part in recycling programs. We should also buy products made from recycled materials, such as recycled paper, to help save trees.
【小题1】Why is it better to choose local products if possible?A.Things from abroad do harm to our environment. | B.Local products are much cheaper. |
C.To choose local products means that we love our country. | D.Things from abroad aren’t necessary. |
A.Throw them away. |
B.If they are still suitable, keep them. |
C.Clean the floor with them. |
D.Give them to others and buy new ones. |
A.To shop with plastic bags. | B.To use paper cups. |
C.To collect old newspapers. | D.To burn fallen leaves. |
A.We should learn to grow vegetables. |
B.People mustn’t produce waste any more. |
C.Children are too young to do anything to save energy. |
D.The simplest everyday activities are important to protect our world. |
A.Always buy new things and throw away old ones. | B.Use china cups instead of paper cups. |
C.Recycle something that can be recycled. | D.Think first when we want to buy something. |
