A well-known speaker started his speech by holding up a $20 bill. In the room of 200 people, he asked, “Who would like this $ 20 bill?”
Hands started going up. He said, “I am going to give this $20 to one of you. But first let me do this.” He crumpled the bill. He then asked, “Who still wants it?” Still, the hands of stayed in the air.
“Well,” he replied, “What if I do this?” He dropped it on the ground and started to grind(碾压) it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. “Who still wants it?” The hands did not move.
“My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I do to the money, you will still want it because it is still worth $20.”
“Sometimes we feel like we are worthless because we did something wrong or the situation is not good. But no matter what has happened, you will never lose your value and you are still priceless to those who love you. They care about you because you are special to them.”
“The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by who we are.”

When I was in Grade 8, I had an argument with my classmate, Tony. I have forgotten what the argument was about, but I have never forgotten the lesson I learned that day.
I believed that I was right and he was wrong, and Tony believed that I was wrong and he was right. Our teacher, a kind and clever lady, decided to teach us a lesson. She brought us to the front of the class and placed him on one side of her desk and me on the other. In the middle of her desk was a large and round object. I could clearly see that it was black. The teacher asked us what color the object was. “White,” Tony answered. I couldn’t believe he said the object was white! “Clearly, it was black!” Another argument started between Tony and me, this time about the color of the object.
The teacher told me to go and stand where Tony was standing and told him to go and stand where I was standing. We changed places, and now she asked me what color the object was. I had to answer, “White.” It was an object with two differently colored sides—from his side it was white, while from my side it was black. “Boys, now, what do you say?” The teacher smiled at us. Tony has been my best friend ever since.
My teacher taught me a very important lesson that day:When you disagree with others, you’d better be in their shoes. That will help you look at the situation through their eyes, and truly understand their ideas and ways of thinking.

When I was a teenager, I volunteered to pass out water at a local race. I was so excited to see all the different runners, they passed by and quickly took a cup of water. Some ran past, some walked past and a few wheeled past.
I saw so many types of people doing it. I thought maybe 1 could do it too! The next year I decided to run for the race, but I had a little running practice. I just wanted to finish.
On the day of the race, it was terribly hot. After running for about 5 kilometres , 1 was thinking, “Why did I do this?’ And at one moment ,I said to myself,“I am never doing this again!”
That first 10km race was quite an experience. I ran slowly, I walked, I ran slowly and walked. At times,I didn’t know if I could finish.
Near the end, a 70-year-old man ran past me, very fast, and I felt a little shamed that I was more than 50 years younger than he and I couldn't even keep up with him. But then 1 realized something. He was running his race and I was running mine. How often in life do we compare ourselves with others when we really shouldn't? I decided that I would not give up on running races, and that one day I would be one of those 70-year-old men who were still running.
As I crossed the finishing line, I was proud of myself. I didn't regret having such an experience.
