Cateura, Paraguay, isn’t a common community. It’s next to a landfill where, every day, more than 1.3 【小题1】 (百万) kilos of rubbish is left. Cateura doesn’t have much to offer its residents (居民), and there’s very little 【小题2】 (机会) for the children who live here.

Favio Chavez wanted to change that. Chavez, who moved there to work 【小题3】 (作为) an engineer, wanted to bring music to the community’s children. He began giving 【小题4】 (功课) with donated instruments. So many children were interested that he quickly ran out. So, he decided to use the neighborhood’s rubbish to 【小题5】 (创造) new ones. Violins were made from cans, 【小题6】 (木制的) spoons and forks. Cellos (大提琴) were made from large oil drums. Everything came from the landfill. And so, the Recycled Orchestra (管弦乐队) was born. The orchestra’s first concert was held for the 【小题7】 (自豪的) parents of its members. But word 【小题8】 (传播) about these talented musicians. 【小题9】 (不久), they performed around Paraguay, and later, they 【小题10】 (旅行) to Brazil for a concert. Before long, their music was being played around the world.

Two weeks ago, on a hot summer afternoon, I was about to cross a little busy road when I   noticed an old grandpa with a heavy bag on his back just a few meters from me. He walked painfully and it looked as if his legs had no strength to even c【小题1】 him. A few minutes later, I realized I’d forgotten to cross the road. And he’d seen me looking at him.

I loved my grandparents very much. That was why I didn’t f【小题2】 to smile at the old people whenever I saw them. Now I met this grandpa, I didn’t want to m【小题3】 the chance, either. He moved slowly to me and handed me a note. There was an address written on it. As it was a long way and anybody would pass out(昏倒) in such weather, I didn’t want him to walk all the way. So I showed him the d【小题4】 and said he would need a taxi. Hearing this he shook his head again and again and that made me feel a little d【小题5】 .

Then I asked where he came from, he replied w【小题6】   that he was from the countryside about 10 kilometers from here and came to visit a relative. I was shocked because he never looked as if he could take even two steps without f【小题7】 . So, without a second thought I called a taxi for him. The grandpa wasn’t r【小题8】 for the ride, for he had no money. I paid for his j【小题9】   and asked the driver to drop him at his place safely.

When I turned to look at the grandpa who said thanks to me with a few drops of happy tears on his face, many unforgettable m【小题10】   of my grandparents flashed in my mind, making me feel like crying.

Mother lent them a watch so that they would not come home late. When they arrived at the railway, they looked up at the trees above it.

“What’s happening?” Peter said. “Look at the trees. They are m【小题1】.”

He was right. The trees were sliding down the hill. “It’s a landslide（滑坡）,” Roberta said. “The next train will come in five minutes. And the train is only about fifteen kilometers away.”

“We can r【小题2】 towards the train and wave（挥手） to the driver,” Phyllis said.

“He won’t think there is anything wrong,” Roberta said. “We a【小题3】wave to him.”

“We need something red to wave,” Peter said. “Red is for d【小题4】.”

“Our petticoats（衬裙）are red!” Phyllis shouted. “Let’s take them off.”

“Mother will be a【小题5】if you do that,” Roberta said. “Petticoats are expensive.”     

“People may die if there is an accident,” Peter said. “Petticoats are not important.”

Then Peter took a k【小题6】from his pocket, cut the Petticoats into six pieces and put them on to sticks. Now they had six red flags. They ran a【小题7】the railway line and waited at the side for the train to come. They had to wait a long time. Peter thought the w【小题8】must be wrong, but it was the train that was late.

Then the train arrived. The children waved and waved their flags, shouting “stop, stop!” The driver saw the red flags and the children. He stopped the train b【小题9】 it hit the trees.

Luckily, they saved the train. “You are b【小题10】and clever children,” the driver told them.
