     Some etiquette(礼仪)in modern life

Do you often use a cell phone? Do you take the subway to school every day? These items make our modern life easier. But do you know how we should behave properly while using them? The following suggestions might be helpful.

For cell phone users

◆Keep your voice down when you make a phone call in public. Shouting on the phone may make others feel uncomfortable. And you’d better not use it during an appointment(约会).

◆Stop sending messages or playing games with your cell phone at a dinner or a party. It’s a good time to communicate(交流)with your family and friends.

◆Don’t make or answer a call while driving. It is not only very dangerous for both you and your passengers but also against the law.

For subway passengers

◆You are supposed to wait in line while buying tickets and getting on the subway.

◆You’re not allowed to eat, drink or smoke on the subway train. The smell and noise may trouble others. It’s our duty to keep the train clean and tidy. Besides, smoking is bad for health.

◆ You can’t take pets on the train. As we all know, animals may spread diseases(传播疾病)and get the train dirty.

◆ You’d better not lie across the subway seats even if the train isn’t crowded. Offering your seat to someone who needs it is regarded as good manners.

Have you heard of visual(视觉)learners and auditory(听觉)learners? Visual learners learn best by seeing. If you seem to easily remember information for pictures, you’re likely(可能) a visual learner. Auditory learners best by hearing. If you seem to remember things by hearing them, then you are likely an auditory learner. Here are some learning tips for these two types of learners.

Tips for visual learners

For visual learners, this is very important! If your teacher uses a PowerPoint, watch the pictures carefully and find out what they might include and their hidden meanings.

Take notes by drawing mind maps and connecting ideas instead of just copying down a list. This way, your brain will easily connect the different concepts(概念). You can even draw pictures if you find that works better for you.

Mark your notes in different colors. This will help your brain in keeping all of the information separate(分离的). Different colors show different kinds of information or importance.

Tips for auditory learners

If you don’t listen carefully in class, then as auditory learner, you’re missing the easiest way to learn. If you find that taking notes prevents you from listening, ask a friend if you can borrow his or her notes or write down everything you remember right after the lesson.

A good book can be satisfying, can improve your knowledge and can teach you a lot. There are several ways to develop a lifetime reading habit.

Set times. You should have a few set times every day when you’ll read for at least 5—10 minutes, no matter what happens. For example, make it a habit to read during breakfast and lunch (and even dinner if you eat alone).

Always carry a book. No matter where you go, take a book with you. When you leave the house, make sure to have at least one book. You may keep the book in the car, or into the office or to anywhere you go, unless you’re sure you won’t have time to read.

Make a list. Keep a list of all the great books you want to read. You can keep this in a pocket notebook. Be sure to add to it whenever you hear about a good book. Keep a running list, and cross out the ones you have read.

Find a quiet place. Find a place in your home where you can sit in a comfortable chair without television or computer near the chair. There should be no music or noisy family members. Setting a high aim may be useful to you. For example. Tell yourself that you want to read 50 books this year. Try your best to finish reading them. Just be sure you’re still enjoying the reading.

Liu Qing hasn’t slept well for months. Every day, the 13-year-old middle school student wakes up with dark circles around her eyes. She has lost interest in everything and doesn’t want to talk to anyone. She knows she’s got depression(抑郁症 ).

Liu is one of many who suffer from(患……)depression. According to World Health Organization(WHO), about 264 million around the world are affected(感染)by depression. In China, depression affects around 54 million people and is one of the leading causes of suicide(自杀).

To bring depression to people’s attention, Zhang Nan, a 27-year-old photo studio owner in Wuhan, Hubei, started a photo project called Crinkled Fog. Over the last three years, he has taken pictures of over 100 people fighting with depression. “Although things have been better with people talking openly about it now, there are still misunderstandings about mental illness,” Zhang said.

Depression is, in fact, a real illness. Just like your body, your moods(情感)can fall ill, too. No matter how terrible it is, there are effective(有效的)treatments. A main problem is that people are ashamed of the illness and don’t look for professional help. Experts suggest we take an active and open view of depression and support our friends and family members who are experiencing depression.

If you feel depressed, it’s best to do something about it—depression doesn’t just go away on its own. Besides getting help from a doctor, here are some other tips.

◆Exercise. Take a walk for about half an hour every day—or dance, or bike if you prefer.

◆Share. When you know what’s got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend.

◆Try to notice good things. Depression makes everything seem hopeless. So try to notice the good things in life.
