It’s reported that a high-speed railway opened on December 30th, 2019 between Beijing and Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, construction (施工) of which started in April, 2016. According to China Railway (CR) , the 174-km-long railway line, an important project for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, will shorten the trip between the two host cities from over three hours to only 47 minutes.

It will be the world's first high-speed railway on which self-driving trains can reach a speed of up to 350 kilometers per hour. "Now, the drivers only need to push button and the system will independently speed up, slow down, stop and open the passenger doors," said Liu Chunyu, a high-speed train driver.

Known as China's first "intelligent high-speed railway line", the Beijing-Zhangjiakou line features not only self-driving, but also intelligent modules. "We want to connect the high-speed train with different new technologies, like cloud computing, big data and AI, making passengers feel at home, " Zhang Bo, a researcher from China Academy of Railway Sciences, said. What’s more, there is a mobile news center where passengers can watch live Olympic broadcasts on the train.

The line has 10 stations, five in Beijing and the others in Hebei Province, including one at the Badaling section of the Great Wall. All the stations are equipped (配备) with smart devices, robots and 5G networks for the convenience of passengers.

"Today, the line also begins to connect some cities in Inner Mongolia and Shanxi Province to the high-speed railway loop (环线) in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei," said Zhu Dianping, an officer from China Railway Beijing Group. The line will finally connect Beijing with most parts of northwest China together.

Traveling by train is usually not easy in China. It can be hard to get a ticket. When you’re traveling to the railway station you look at your watch, afraid you will miss your train.
But there is good news for people traveling between Beijing and Shanghai. Construction (建设) on the express railway (高速铁路) between the two cities started just before the Spring Festival of 2008. When it is finished by 2013, taking a train will be as easy as taking a bus.
“There will be trains every several minutes. Buying a ticket, getting through the checkpoint (检查站) and taking your seat, will take just 10 minutes,” said an engineer.
There may be high-speed trains running at 350 kilometers an hour. The travel time between the two cities will decease from 10 to about 5 hours. The trains will carry twice the present number of passengers.
The new line will be 1,318 kilometers long and go across specially built bridges. It will run along side the present line. There will be 21 stations in Hebei, Tianjin, Shandong, Anhui and Jiangsu.
“The cost of traveling by the express railway may be around 800 yuan. That will be more expensive than an ordinary train, but cheaper than by air.” Said Zhang Xiaoling, a Jiangsu government official.
According to Zhang, the higher price is caused by the large cost of the railway project. At about 200 billion yuan, the project may be even more expensive than the Three Gorges Project (三峡工程).

At an early time, a paper ticket was necessary even for passengers who bought tickets online. But now people are saying goodbye to paper tickets.

Passengers can swipe (刷) an ID card to pass through a gate before taking a high-speed train. This helps the railway operator (铁路运营公司) improve its e-ticket service.

“It’s very convenient and fast,” said Wu Yuanzhen, a passenger from Guangxi. “I am a salesman and travel a lot by train. For us, time is money. E-tickets save time picking up (取票的时间) and improve travel efficiency (效率).”

For passengers who need to change or return their tickets, they can change the tickets or get a refund (退款) through 12306.cn or the ticket office at the station.

Since 2011, passengers have been able to swipe their ID cards at self-service machines (自助操作机) to take the Beijing-Tianjin high-speed railway and Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway.

Checking in (办理登乘手续) by swiping an ID card is now available (可用的) at high-speed railway stations in most big cities across China, especially in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Wuhan. However, at stations in some remote areas, passengers still need a paper ticket to get on a train.

Over a million people around the world lose their lives due to car accidents each year. While nearly all of these deaths are the consequence of human mistakes, there are no good ways to reduce the number of deaths. Surely the best plan is driver-less technology.

Driver-less cars are no longer an idea of the future. With the technology for the driver-less car already developed for quite a long time, and some important inventions already seen in some cars, the driver-less car could soon be with us.

This is wonderful because driver-less technology is expected to reduce the number of road deaths; a research group in the United Kingdom says that driver-less cars will lead to 2,500 fewer road deaths before 2030.

How are driver-less cars safer? Firstly, driver-less cars can help manage traffic. By using communication technologies to “talk” to each other, driver-less cars find the best roads. Information such as distance between cars, traffic and time it takes to get to the place is sent to the cars. This means fewer chances of these cars running into each other. Secondly, the use of driver-less cars means fewer accidents will happen because of human mistakes. For example, accidents caused by little sleep, drunk drinking or speeding will be avoided. Finally, the driver-less technology of the future, is expected to be more reliable than a human driver.

If lives can be saved by driver-less cars, let’s hope these cars are on our roads very soon.
