On April 5, Queen Elizabeth II gave a short but powerful speech to inspire (激励) the British people. The UK, like many countries around the world, has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic (冠状病毒流行) . Many people have to stay at home and many businesses have been closed.

In her speech, the Queen thanked people of all walks of life (各行各业) for both following stay-at-home rules and making efforts to help their neighbors. She also thanked the country’s medical workers as they continue to fight the virus.

The Queen talked about her first-ever radio broadcast—delivered in 1940—when she and her sister Margaret spoke to children who had been evaluated ( 撤 离 ) from their homes during World War II. Fearing that German bombing ( 轰 炸 ) would kill people in the cities, millions of children in England were sent to safer places in the countryside.

“Echoes (再现) of that struggle of the 1940s, which for so long defined (定义) Britain and its self-image, ran through the broadcast,” the BBC said.

She ended the speech with a familiar phrase: “We will meet again.” It’s a reference   ( 引 用 ) to Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again, a song that encouraged unity (团结) and optimism (乐观) among Britons during the World War II. With her speech, the Queen hoped to encourage national unity.

Nobody seemed to care about Mary. She was born in India. Her father was a British official and busy with his work every day. Her mother, a beautiful woman, spent all her time going to parties. So an Indian woman, Kamala, had to take care of the little girl. Mary was not a pretty child. She had a thin angry face and thin yellow hair. She was always giving orders to Kamala. Mary never thought of other people, but only of herself. In fact, she was a very selfish(自私的), bad-tempered(坏脾气的)little girl.

One very hot morning, when she was about nine years old, she woke up and saw there was a different Indian servant(仆人)by her bed.

“What are you doing here?” she asked crossly. “Go away! And send Kamala to me at once!”

The woman looked afraid. “I’m sorry, Miss Mary. She, she, she can’t come!”

Something strange was happening that day. Some of the house servants were missing and everybody looked afraid. But nobody told Mary anything, and Kamala still did not come. So at last Mary went out into the garden and played by herself under a tree. She pretended(假装)she was making her own flower garden and picked large red flowers to push into the ground. All the time she was saying crossly to herself. “I hate Kamala! I’ll hit her when she comes back!”

Just then she saw her mother coming into the garden with a young Englishman. They did not notice the child, who listened to their talk.

“It’s very bad, is it?” her mother asked the young man in a worried voice.

“Very bad,” he answered seriously. “Many people are dying in the town. It’s dangerous to stay in this town. You should go to the hills, where there’s no illness.”

“Oh, I know!” she cried. “We must leave soon!”

Suddenly they heard loud cries coming from the servants’ rooms at the side of the house.

“What happened?” cried Mary’s mother wildly.

“I think one of your servants died just now. You didn’t tell me there was illness here, in your house!”

“I didn’t know!” she shouted. “Quick, come with me!” And together they ran into the house.

Now Mary understood what happened. The terrible illness had already killed many people in the town, and in all the houses people were dying. In Mary’s house it was Kamala who had just died. Later that day three more servants died there.
