When throwing away trash, do you know which bin it should go in? Some of you might not be able to answer this question. But it’s very important to know how to deal with your waste. Not knowing how to deal with waste is harder to save energy and protect the environment.
If you don’t deal with your garbage, all of it will go to a landfill(垃圾场)and be buried ( 埋 ) together. These landfills can taken up large areas of ground. The electronic waste you throw away can pollute the soil and groundwater. Other pieces of garbage can be used to make other things if they are properly recycled.
Now, many cities in China have taken actions in recent years. For example, Shanghai announced in July that they will divided the garbage into four groups: recyclable, harmful, wet, and dry.
Paper, metal, glass and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste.
Harmful waste includes things like medicine, batteries and fluorescent bulbs( 荧光灯泡 ). these things are not recyclable.
Wet waste is also known as household waste. “They are things that you don’t want but pigs can eat,” Guangzhou daily explained.
Some waste such as plastic bags, beer bottles and other man-made things will go in the “dry waste” bin.
Many other Chinese cities, including Shenzhen, Guangdong plan to use this way to deal with their garbage. Let’s encourage each other to deal with our waste well by sorting it to protect the environment.

The temperature has dropped to 30 degrees below zero. But that doesn’t stop the fishermen of Songyuan City in Jilin Province. Each morning, they get up early and rush to Chagan Lake with a group of horses. The fishermen use the horses to help pull fishing nets out of the frozen (结冰的) lake.
For centuries, those living around Chagan Lake have kept alive the tradition of ice fishing. They dig holes through the thick ice and use a huge net to catch winter fish in the freezing waters. This special method has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产).
Every year in December, there is a winter fishing festival, which marks the beginning of the winter fishing season. Over 20 activities are held during the festival, such as winter sports competitions, nature watching, and the selling of the first-caught fish.
None of the tourists at this year’s festival would ever imagine that Chagan Lake used to be only tens of square kilometers in size. In the past, there was little rainfall and the lake grew smaller over time. Also, overfishing is one of the main reasons.
To bring Chagan Lake’s beauty back, the government used a lot of different methods. They brought in water from the Songhua River, grew more plants, and kept the water clean. The lake now covers about 500 square kilometers, and fish numbers have returned to a normal level. Now, an increasing number of tourists flock to the lake each year to experience the ancient ice-fishing tradition.

One way to reduce the number of deaths is through cooking equipment powered by the sun.Crosby Menzies,a solar power expert in a South African company, described his latest solar cooker called the“Sol.4”,”It is four square meters of mirrors, six to eight meters in length. It is quite a large cooler.”
The“Sol.4”works by reflecting (反射)light from the sun off large mirrors. The mirrors direct (把…对准)the light at a cooking pan. Then the light heats the pan with solar energy.Within two minutes, the pan is hot enough to cook sausages and onions. In just four minutes, water can be boiled. That is as fast as cooking with natural gas or electricity.
The cooker is also much “friendlier” than other models because people do not have to stand in the sun to use it.And people can prepare meals without having to collect firewood or spend money on coal.Such individuals would be less likely to have breathing illnesses from harmful smoke.
At present, the cooker only works when the sun is shining. But engineers are working on a way to make it work without sunlight.
Each cooker costs about $2000,which is a large amount of money for most Africans. To solve that problem,Crosby Menzies has crated a non﹣governmental organization called solar Cookers for Africa. It plans to raise money through donations to provide poor people with solar cooking equipment.

There are many wetlands in China and some of them have become the world’s important wetlands.
The Chinese Yellow Sea Wetlands (中国黄海湿地) are among them. They are in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. They are home for many different kinds of animals. The world’s largest Milu Deer Nature Reserve is in them. More than 700 milu deer (麋鹿) live freely there. There are not many red-crowned cranes in the world, but every winter you can see some in the Red-crowned Crane Nature Reserve in the Yellow Sea Wetlands.
The temperature in the wetlands is usually neither too high nor too low (neither…nor…既不……也不……). There is a lot of rain and sunshine, too. They are really good places for wildlife. Offering food and home for some special kinds of animals is not the only reason why we need to protect wetlands. Wetlands are important because they also prevent flood. But some people want to change the wetlands to make more space for farms and buildings. This means there will be less and less space for wildlife.
Luckily, more and more people are beginning to realize the importance of wetlands and wildlife. Every year, on February 2nd, many activities are held to tell people more about wetlands.
