My mother used to ask me what the most important part of the body was. I got different answers at different ages.

When I was young, I thought sound was very important to us, so I said, “My ears, Mum.” But she shook her head and said no. Several years passed, and she asked me again. I believed that I got the right answer after thinking it over. So I told her, “Sight(视力) is very important to everyone, so it must be our eyes.” But she told me I was wrong. I tried many times after that, but her answer was always the same. Till last year my grandma died. Everybody was crying, everybody was hurt. My mom looked at me and asked me with tears in her eyes, “Do you know the answer now?” I was surprised when she asked me this question then. “My son, the answer is your shoulder. Everyone needs a shoulder to cry on(倾诉的对象).”

Finally, I realized all she hoped is that I can have enough love and friends so that I will have a shoulder to cry on when I need it.

It was a cold and snowy morning after the winter holiday. In fact, it was my first day at my new school. I was walking slowly and worrying about lots of things. It was 7:00 in the morning and there weren’t many people on the road. A girl on a bike passed me quickly. She was riding on ice when suddenly she fell off her bike a few steps(步) in front of me. She was trying hard to get up but fell once more. Without thinking, I went over and helped her stand up. She said, “Thank you,” with a smile and then rode away. The words “Thank you” warmed me and this small thing made me feel less nervous about my new school.

At last, I got to school. The teacher took me to the classroom and asked me to sit down beside a girl. I knew some of the students were looking at me but I was too nervous to look at them. Soon the first class started. It was English. They used a different textbook(课本) from my old school and I didn’t have a copy(复印件). As I was wondering what to do, a book appeared(出现) in front of me. “Let’s share,” the girl next to me said. “And hi, I’m Carrie.” I looked up. It was the girl I helped that morning. What a surprise!

From then on, we became good friends. She was my first and best friend at my new school. Helping her also helped me find a friend.
