The boss of a big company needed to call one of his employees about a serious problem with one of the main computers.
He dialed the employee’s home phone number and a child's whisper(低语) came, “Hello” The boss asked. “Is your daddy at home?” “Yes” whispered the small voice. “May I talk with him?” the man asked.
To the surprise of the boss, the small voice whispered, “No.” The boss continued, “Is your mommy there?” “Yes” came the answer. “May I talk with her?” Again the small voice whispered “No.”
Since it was impossible that a young child would be left home alone, the boss decided he would just leave a message to the person who should be there watching over the child. “Is there anyone besides you?” the boss asked. “Yes” whispered the child, “A policeman.” Then the boss asked if he could speak with the policeman. “No, he’s busy talking to daddy and mommy and the fireman.” came the whispered answer.
Hearing what sounded like a helicopter (直升机) through the earpiece on the phone, the boss asked, “What is the noise?” “A helicopter.” “What is going on there?” asked the boss. In a serious whispering voice, the child answered, “The search team just landed the helicopter.” Appalled and concerned, the boss asked, “Why are they there?” Still whispering, the young voice replied with an unclear giggly (窃笑), “They are looking for me. ”

For most children, bath time is fun. But four-year-old Harry Floyd used to have a very different experience—soon after climbing into the water he felt itchy (发痒的) from head to foot.
Harry first started to develop small itchy bumps on the skin at three months old. He woke at 3 a. m. and was covered in the bumps, but they cleared up within an hour. When Harry's mother Lisa got him to the doctor, there was nothing to see. Lisa initially thought it was the soap that Harry was allergic to, but even when she just used water to bathe him he would still get the bumps. Lisa was then alarmed to see that when the weather was really cold or hot Harry would start to get them. Within a few minutes they would spread over his body. He'd just scream and try to scratch them.
Lisa and her husband Eddie took Harry to the doctor many times over the next year, but were told it was simply a virus and the condition wouldn't affect his older brother, Oliver. At six months Harry was diagnosed with several food allergies, which doctors thought might have caused the bumps. But Harry continued to get the bumps even after shunning those foods. Out of desperation, the family took Harry to Great Ormond Street Hospital to see a private specialist. By coincidence, Harry got the bumps when they were waiting to see the consultant. So the consultant saw exactly how severe it was. And Harry was diagnosed with physical urticaria (荨麻疹), a skin allergy to a host of common triggers (触发物). Since the diagnosis, Harry’s condition has greatly improved.
The cause of physical urticaria is still a mystery. Genetics may play a role and stress has been seen as a trigger. From newborn babies to the old are likely to suffer from it. Recent research suggests around one million people in Britain suffer from the condition, although experts say this may be inaccurate, with many more going undiagnosed.

Five-year-old Willard Wigan couldn’t tell the difference between an M and a W or a 6 and a 9 because of dyslexia, a learning disability. Usually, his mind drifted — to playing outside, to his dog, or to the ants. Willard was especially curious about those ants. He felt like them, small and insignificant. He noticed the ants were coming and going from a hole in the dirt. Gathering pieces of wood, Willard constructed a little building for ants.
At school, Willard still had problems, but he knew he could do something special. Willard created tiny furniture for the ant houses. His artistic skill increased, and a love for little things began to grow. At age nine, Willard began carving (雕刻) faces on toothpicks. When he showed his mother the carved faces, she said, “This is what you do well. You must work hard to be the best.” Years later, Willard carves the tiniest artwork in the world! His sculptures are so small that several can fit on a full stop at the end of a sentence.
Willard works best at night when there are few disturbances. He often works for months to complete a sculpture. Willard’s favorite paintbrush is one hair from the back of a dead fly! To move his sculptures, Willard uses an eyelash. But even that can be tough. Once, while moving a microscopic Alice in Wonderland, his cell phone rang. Terrified, Willard took in a quick breath. When he looked back, Alice was gone. After working for weeks to carve her, he’d accidentally breathed her in!
Willard sculpts everything from famous people to fictional characters. Because of their beauty and rarity, his sculptures have made Willard a wealthy man. But he says, “Success isn’t about material things like an expensive watch or a costly ring; it’s about persevering and achieving your dreams.” Willard Wigan who felt small as a boy has shown something small can really be big.
