Cruz Genet, 11, and Anthony Skopick, 10, couldn’t agree. Were the birds out on the ice ducks or geese? So on a cold January evening last year, the two friends ventured (冒险) onto the frozen pond near their homes in Frankfort, Illinois, to get a better look. First, they threw a rock onto the ice to test it, Cruz told NBC 5 Chicago. “Then we stepped on it.” Convinced the ice would hold their weight, Anthony took a few steps, but then he fell through the seemingly frozen surface.

Cruz rushed to help his panicked friend. However, the pond swallowed him, too. Cruz managed to lift himself out of the extremely cold water and onto a more solid section. He then gingerly worked his way toward Anthony. But the ice didn’t hold, and he fell in again. This ime, he couldn’t get out.

The boys were up to their necks in icy water and quickly losing feeling. Any chance of their freeing themselves was slipping away. Cruz was sure that he was going to die.

Anthony’s older sister had seen the boys fall through the ice and started screaming, wishing someone to save them.

John Lavin, a neighbor driving nearby on his way to the grocery store, heard her. He quickly pulled over. Seeing the boys, he grabbed (抓住) a nearby buoy (救生圈), kicked off his shoes, and ran into the cold water, struggling his way through the ice. Lavin made his way to Cruz and Anthony and pulled them back to land.

The boys were taken to the hospital, where doctors discovered that their five- minute stay in the water had lowered their body temperature nearly ten degrees. Fortunately, they have fully recovered, though they are still a little amazed by their fearless neighbor. “Just to think,” says Cruz, “if he hadn’t been there, I could have died.”

When you want to find a job, you have to face the employer and you must know how to introduce yourself well. Then you will be lucky enough.
The first impressions can play a major role in how an employer like you as a candidate(求职者). What you say during the first step of the interview may make a big difference. In fact, some hiring managers may make a decision to refuse a candidate based on what they didn’t do when you met them. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to interview manners and to carefully think through how you will introduce yourself during a job interview.
When arriving at the interview site you can introduce yourself to the receptionist (接待员) by giving your name and telling the purpose of your visit. For example: “My name is Tim Jones and I have an interview scheduled with John Smith at 2 pm.” You will be guided into the interview room or the hiring manager will come out to meet you in the reception area. Again, take the time to introduce yourself so the interviewer knows who you are.
Offer to shake hands, even if the interviewer doesn’t offer his hand first. Tell the interviewer that it is a pleasure to meet him. Smile, and be sure to make eye contact.
Many hiring managers will start an interview with an open-ended question like “Tell me
about yourself.” Your response should focus on the key elements in your background. You should carefully analyze the job first to the interviewer, and you can point out the interests, skills, experiences, and personal qualities.
Your introduction should be brief enough to hold the interest of the interviewer so that you can move on to the next question. Your goal is to connect personally with the interviewer as well as to show that you’re qualified for the job. Of course, your comments should show your enthusiasm for the job and organization. However, don’t overdo it and don’t spend too much time talking about yourself.

How listen Actively

In the course of the last 20 years, I was a taker. Everything was all about me. But that has changed for me. I consistently look for ways to help others — personally and professionally.

I now focus on what the other person needs before my own needs as a way to build stronger relationships. 【小题1】

What is active listening? Active listening is an analytical exercise.【小题2】 To make active listening more effective, you can also add complementary (互补的)skill sets. Mirroring what people have just said in your own words helps them feel heard and helps ensure your understanding is accurate. That is why active listening, not listening while doing,is essential for building better relationships with your team.

【小题3】Learning to become an active listener requires you to slow down, have patience, and learn to ignore distractions (especially emails and texts). Techniques like reflective listening can help. If you are regularly repeating what has been said, you won’t miss any part of the conversation.【小题4】 This helps build trust, making the speakers like you more and therefore more likely work on what you both agree on.

What will active listening do for you and your career? Active listening isn’t just about managing a team member or a conflict. Do leaders respond to the concerns and issues they hear from the staff? Do you have the skill set to actively listen and address them?【小题5】 If you do it, you might just find your team or your organization is more adaptive than most ones.

A.Why do you want to be a listener?
B.It requires concentration on what is said.
C.How do you become a better active listener?
D.What should you do to benefit your speaker?
E.These are the questions employees are asking.
F.You also show that the speaker has your full attention.
G.I am able to do that when I stop talking and start listening.

Sending an emoji (表情符号) to your doctor probably isn’t something most patients think about when they’re feeling sick. However, researchers say these symbols can actually help improve communication between patients and medical staff.

Senior author Shuhan He, MD, from Massachusetts General Hospital believes the use of emojis is a great opportunity to take communication to another level. “Emojis could be particularly important in treating children with still-developing language skills, people with disabilities that affect their ability to communicate, and the many patients who speak a different language,” Dr. He says.

Researchers say that although there are around 3, 500 emojis in all, there are only about 45 which have a connection to medicine. The first ones appeared in 2015, with a needle and a pill. In 2017, Apple added new emojis to represent people with disabilities. Two years later, a stethoscope (听诊器), bones, teeth and microbe (微小的) emojis popped into computers and smartphones everywhere. Dr. He helped to create anatomical (解剖学的) heart and lung emojis which were introduced in 2020. He is now working to create even more medical-related emojis.

The study authors add that, in a medical emergency, time is particularly critical. Using an emoji could help doctors know what’s wrong in a jiffy. The growth of telemedicine is providing a golden opportunity for emojis to find a purpose in the health care industry. Dr. He believes communication through emojis can help patients express things like the intensity of pain or even mood changes when words fail them.

“It’s clear that emojis have become part of the global, mainstream conversation, and that medical societies need to take them seriously,” Dr. He concludes. “They should now reach an agreement on the medical accuracy of these emojis, and then work to get them approved through the global Sandard-setting body.”

【小题1】Who may find it most convenient to use emojis to communicate with doctors?

B.The first ones were created by Dr. He.
C.They were specially designed for smartphones.
D.Anatomical-related ones haven't yet to been introduced.
【小题3】Which word best explains “in a jiffy” underlined in paragraph 4?
A.Quickly.B.Randomly.C.Indirectly.D.Personally.
【小题4】What does Dr. He suggest medical societies doing now?
A.Promoting telemedicine globally.
B.Encouraging patients to use emojis.
C.Establishing uniform standards for the use of emojis.
