Many people think that money brings happiness. However, according to Professor Michael Argyle, this is not true. In Britain, we are 【小题1】 (rich) but unhappier than fifty years   ago. The USA is the richest country in the world but Americans are not the happiest people in the world.

Professor Argyle has found that very poor people and very rich people are unhappier than those in between. For example, very poor people in 【小题2】developing world live in overcrowded houses without any running water and 【小题3】no electricity. However, there are many millionaires (百万富翁) with 【小题4】 (person) problems. A lot of young people 【小题5】get rich very quickly are at risk.

Because of this, a few young millionaires are changing their life styles. Richard Cross, a multi-millionaire computer analyst ( 分 析 师 ) from California is an example. His house 【小题6】 (show) no signs of his wealth. There is a small garden   and there only two   cars 【小题7】 (park) outside the house. “I want my kids 【小题8】 (live) a normal life,” says Richard.

So what can make 【小题9】 (we) happy? According to Professor Argyle, you should have one close relationship and some close 【小题10】 (friend). You should do a little sport and have a lot of contact (联系) with other people. Other people make you happy, not money!

Childhood is a time【小题1】there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do.【小题2】is impossible that he will ever again in his life【小题3】(give) so much without having to do anything in return. But a child has his pains; he is not so free to do【小题4】he wishes to; he is continually being told not to do something, or being punished【小题5】what he has done wrong.

When the child has become a young man and this young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work on his own if he wants to live【小题6】(comfort). If he spends most of his time【小题7】 (play) about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go【小题8】(hunger). If, however, he works hard,【小题9】 ( keep) out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in【小题10】(social).

I can still remember the afternoon when we climbed the mountain as if it were yesterday.

It was a sunny day. Eager to spend some time outside, I went up the mountain with my uncle. The mountain was hard 【小题1】 (climb) and had tough rocks and streams on it. In the end, exhausted and hot, I couldn’t go any 【小题2】 (far). So we went back down the mountain in the end.

On the way back down, my uncle asked me a question 【小题3】 left me speechless for a second: “What’s your dream, young lady?”

“I have no idea,” I answered 【小题4】 thinking it for a while. Then he smiled and told me about his story. He didn’t perform well at school when he was a student. Although nobody thought he could succeed, he knew clearly 【小题5】 his dream was－to be a businessman. “I knew I wasn’t gifted when it came to studying, 【小题6】 I tried to buy snacks from a market and sell them after class,” he told me. After he left school, he started selling different items to find out which one was most attractive to customers. Of course, he often had no money in his pocket, but however tough life was, he never gave up.

“There is no doubt that a person who puts in a great deal of effort to reach his or her goal will have good luck at some point. The meaning of life is to chase your dream,” he said gently. That night I 【小题7】 hardly fall asleep. I lay in bed tossing and turning, asking myself, “What’s my motivation?”

I once wanted to be a top student, but the hard work needed meant putting everything into following my passion. If I find myself lacking willpower, what should I do? Leaving home early the next morning, I climbed the mountain again by myself. It made me think: 【小题8】 we don’t experience the climb, how can we get to see the scenery on the top of the mountain? In the end, I reached the top and 【小题9】 (fascinate) by the warm breeze and sunshine. 【小题10】 could be more pleasant than that.
