The British accent of Cary Gran has finally been revealed after a fellow actor tracked down a secretly tape recording of the Bristol-born big screen superstar.

Jason Isaacs, who plays Cary Grant in a coming ITV biopic (传记片), said that although setting his mind on figuring out the actor’s real accent, he had become upset by the absence of interviews with Cary Grant.

The star, whose death aged 82 in 1986 brought to an end one of the 20th century’s greatest screen careers, rarely spoke in public and would always adopt a mid-American accent for the cameras

Isaacs, 60, said this week that after some “detective work”, he found out about an interview Cary Grant gave to a student from the University of Iowa months before his death. The student’s classmate secretly recorded the interview in which Cary Grant spoke about his hatred (厌恶) of being approached by fans. The secret recording reveals Cary Grant’s true accent.

At the launch of the ITV drama Archie-after Cary Grant’s birth name Archibald Leach — Isaacs said that when he landed the role, “the first thing I did was look for interviews of Cary Grant.” Isaacs added; “He didn’t want to be seen and he didn’t want to be known. There was nothing at all. Only the films. And that’s not what he spoke like. His accent changed a lot in the films.

Isaacs said of listening to the tape: “I felt like I’d finally made a real connection with him and that’s the voice you hear on screen in Archie. It’s more English than he is in the movies. People think they remember Cary Grant’s voice but what they remember is Tony Curtis in Some Like It Hot.”

The ITV biopic focuses on Grant’s troubled family relationships. Jennifer Grant, Grant’s daughter, said her father had rarely spoken about his childhood. “Sadly I think there was so much shame wrapped up in it,” Jennifer Grant said.

Binge-watching is when a person watches more than one episode of a show in quick succession(一连串，连续）". With developments in the speed and connectivity of the internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favorite shows streamed directly to their television at their convenience.

This behavior is nothing new. In fact, " binge-watching" has been officially listed in dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis, an entire series will become available concurrently. Once the episode finishes many platforms will display pop-ups with “you might like suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode”.

However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back, almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and one quarter have neglected their household chores. Next we’ll be missing work!

Bingeing has other connections-binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said: “The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move.” If people find binge-watching hard to resist, coupled with the fact that it has shown to lead to negligence in many, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction?

The countless of information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, when the activity begins to bleed into other areas, causing us to stop functioning then it becomes a problem. So, what's the answer? Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, “A little of what you fancy does you good.”

With production overrunning (泛滥) on Martin Scorsese’s new film, the famous Hollywood director admitted this month he was worried about the “youthi-fication” technology he was employing to smooth out his actors. The leading actor Robert De Niro and Al Pacino played young versions of their characters in the first half of the film, with their wrinkles and jowls (下巴) removed by the technology.

Speaking to the British director Joanna Hogg, the film-maker Martin Scorsese said that good actors should meet some necessary requirements: excellent acting skills, rich imagination, good understanding and so on. However, there was something important that was missing while the technique was used. He added, “I don’t know how to instruct my actors to make their performance more impressive, especially rich eye expressions. Apparently, the technique makes their eyes dull, which disappoints me the most.”

In this case, he isn’t alone. While the technology is doubtless impressive, there have been complaints about the “unnatural valley” effect of digitally de-ageing actors. Film critics (评论家), such as Manohla Dargis of the New York Times, and The Ringer’s Andrew Gruttadaro, observed that “as an audience member watching these films, you get the horrible feeling that you’re not watching a person, but an entity (实体) imitating a person”. Similar reservations have been heard about Anthony Hopkins being de-aged in TV’s Westworld. Later this year, Ang Lee’s Gemini Man will appear, starring Will Smith as a killer who meets his younger self, which is also played by Smith. The problem is that everybody who grew up with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air knows what Will Smith looked like as a younger man, and it wasn’t this one.

To quote Dr Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park, “Scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, and they didn’t stop to think if they should.” De-ageing technology gives us the dazzling impression rather than the effect of youth, as a younger actor would. More goes into the ageing process than mere looks; it betrays a thin understanding of psychology to expect otherwise.
