Living life to its fullest

On the night of August 24, 2001, everything changed when my friend's car hit a wall with me inside. I lost most of my right leg, and I was left bleeding with several broken bones. At the hospital, although my body was weak, my mind was still very clear. I just kept telling myself to hold on. A week later, I made a deal with the doctors that once I could roll onto my side, I could leave. Two weeks later, I was allowed to go home.

Although I left the hospital, the fight was far from over. My left knee was badly injured, which resulted in different operations over the next few years.

And soon, more of my right leg had to be removed. This made it harder to wear my false leg, so I donated it to a nurse who couldn't afford one for herself. The joy of being able to provide this gift for someone else was greater than the happiness I felt on any day I was able to wear it myself.

People often tell me they're proud of me for staying strong. But in my mind, staying strong has always been my only choice. So, on the day I left the hospital, I made a promise to myself to always live life to the fullest. Now, I may not be able to do things the way everybody else does them, but still, I always find a way to do them. I soon settled into everyday life again, until one day I realized I wasn't living my life as fully as I wanted to.

After 13 years of thinking that I was confident, I had an unfamiliar feeling sweep over me. For the first time in my life, I was not only confident but I wanted to help those around me.

In 2014, I even started modeling. My dream is that one day a little girl will see me in a magazine and say, “Wow, she's beautiful, and she only has one leg. I could do that too someday, even though I have a disability.” My dream is simple: to inspire every man, woman, and child into knowing and believing that they are beautiful just the way they are.

My writing career began ten years ago with my articles published locally and nationally. As a beginner, I was happy to be on my way, writing and learning as much as I could. With two little kids underfoot, as well as working full-time, it was really difficult to make time for writing, but I managed.

Readers told me they laughed, cried or were inspired by my articles. But they didn’t know what was really going on behind the typewriter. I was not a happy mommy, and found it difficult to enjoy the little things in everyday life. In short, I was not a happy person.

I realized I had to make some changes. I started walking every morning. It cleared my head, allowed me time to think, gave me fresh air, and made me feel invigorated(精神焕发)and healthy. I was eating wisely, and the weight started to go. I started a new job, joined a monthly writing chapter, and was determined to keep up my walking. Finding the balance was something difficult. But I was determined to fit in writing because it made me happy. Surely I loved to watch the news and have my tea, but that wasn’t what made me truly happy.

My own happiness has shown through my family, my job performance and my attitude towards challenging situations. I again have readers telling me the effect my writing has had on them, with some able to get on with their own writing because of my articles.

It was up to me to make it happen —my own happiness. One step at a time and one word at a time. And I did it.

I was headed out the door the other day with my two sons. We were going to drive to the local grocery(杂货) store to pick up a few things that we had run out of during the week. I shut the door quickly because my dogs were already barking at being left behind in the house. We headed down the hill but when I reached into my pocket for the car keys, they weren’t there. Shaking my head, I walked back up the hill and saw my keys still dangling from the hook(挂钩) where I always hang them.

This, of course, isn’t the only time I have forgotten something recently. In fact, it seems to be happening more and more. There isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t forget something and then remember it later in the day or misplace something and have to go looking for it. The medical professionals all reassure (使...安心)me that this is a normal part of getting older. They say not to worry about it and to take it with a smile. I am doing my best to do so.

I think I will be alright with my forgetful mind too as long as I can keep remembering the important things in life. I don’t mind misplacing my keys as long as I can remember that God loves me. I don’t mind forgetting what I came into a room for as long as I can remember what I am in this life for. I don’t mind being a bit absent-minded as long as I am being loving-hearted.

May you always remember the important things in life: You were created in love. You were created to love. You are called to kindness and made for joy. You can make a difference in this world with every choice you make.

Maupassant(居·莫泊桑)was born in 1850 in northern France. His early life was not happy. His parents separated when he was 11. For a few years, Maupassant was connected with the Ministry of Public Instruction. It is interesting to note that Monsieur Loisel, a poor man character in The Necklace, worked there. At an early age, Maupassant started writing short stories. In 1880, some of his works were published and he received a wide reputation for Boule de Suif (Ball of Tallow). With this success, he began to work full-time on writing. During the next ten years, he wrote over 300 stories, including six novels, three travel books, and a book of verse.
