It was New Year’s night. An aged man was standing at a window. Few more hopeless people than himself now moved towards their certain goal-the tomb. He had already passed sixty of the age leading to it, and he had brought from his journey nothing but errors and regrets.

The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrances of the two roads. One leading to a peaceful, sunny place covered with flowers and fruits; the other leading to a deep dark cave which was endless. He looked towards the sky and cried painfully, “Oh youth, return! Oh, my father, place me once more at the entrance to life”. But both his father and the days of his youth had passed away.

He saw the lights flowing away in the darkness, and these were the days of his wasted life; he saw a star fall from the sky and disappear, and this was the symbol of himself. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood, who entered life together with him. But they had made their way to success and were then honored and happy on that New Year’s night.

The clock in the high church tower struck and the sound made him remember his parents. They had taught him and prayed to God for his good. But he chose the wrong way with shame and grief. He dared no longer to look towards the heaven where his parents lived. He burst out a cry: “Come back, my early days!”And his youth did return, for all this was only a dream on New Year’s night. He was still young though his faults were real. He had not yet entered the deep dark eave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.

This week I have been following the story of an 8-year-old girl named Sa'fyre. She was seriously burned in a house fire three years ago. That fire took the lives of her father and sister but Sa'fyre survived because her father covered her tiny body with his own.

Sa'fyre now lives with her aunt who helped her post a photo on Facebook, stating that this year for Christmas she would like to receive cards from around the world. And Sa'fyre has now received many cards, letters and gifts from all over the globe.

In a world filled with economic inequality and centuries-old religious wars, little Sa'fyre has been able to unite the planet with her simple, innocent request. She has lighted sympathy in hearts everywhere and reminded us that mankind is basically good and kind.

While we are exposed every day by the media to the differences between "us and them" and the reasons we should hate and distrust one another, Sa'fyre has managed to find a common thread of loving kindness that we all share. She has succeeded in bringing the citizens of the world together when all other attempts have failed.

Even as many of us have stepped forward to be of assistance to this little girl, the truth is that she has helped us, by restoring generosity and love during a time when those qualities are most needed.

Last night in my dream I saw the 7.3 billion people of this planet all joined as one, hand in hand; and 7.3 billion hearts beating with the same rhythm. We are not separate. We will only save the planet and our own lives when we finally grasp this fact. We must work together by finding our common ground, our basic humanity. This is a concept so simple that only a little child can lead us there... a child named Sa'fyre who has come to save the world.

One day Mrs. Smith was sitting in her doctor’s waiting room when a young boy and his mother entered the office. The young boy caught Mrs. Smith’s attention because he wore a patch over one eye. She was surprised at how unaffected he seemed to be by the loss of an eye and watched as he followed his mother to a chair nearby.

The doctor’s office was very busy that day, so Mrs. Smith had an opportunity to ask the little boy what had happened to his eye while he played with his soldiers. He considered her question for a long moment, then replied,” I’m a pirate!” Then he returned to his game.

Mrs. Smith was there because she had lost her leg from the knee down in an auto accident. Her trip today was to determine whether it had healed enough to be fitted with a prosthesis. The loss had been a disaster to her. Intellectually, she knew that this loss should not interfere with her life; but emotionally, she just couldn’t overcome this obstacle. Her doctor had suggested imagination, but she had been unable to imagine such an emotionally unacceptable, lasting image.

The word “pirate” changed her life. Instantly, she was transported. She saw herself dressed as Long John Silver, standing aboard a pirate ship. She stood with her legs wide apart—one artificial. Her hands were clenched at her hips, her head up and her shoulders back, as she smiled into a storm. Cold water blew across the board as great waves broke against the ship. Still she stood firmly — proud, fearless.

A few minutes later, the nurse called her. As she balanced on her walking sticks, the young boy noticed her amputation. “Hey, lady,” he called, “what’s wrong with your leg?”

Mrs. Smith looked down at her shortened leg for a moment. Then she replied with a smile, “Nothing. I’m a pirate, too.”
