In 2012,Kim Stemple,a special—education teacher, found herself in a Boston hospital being treated for one of several diseases she had been diagnosed with. The normally lively Stemple was naturally getting very depressed. And then a friend gave her a medal.

Before she got too sick to exercise,Stemple had been a marathon runner. The medal came from a racing partner who had just finished a half marathon in Las Vegas and hoped the keepsake(纪念品)would act as a kind of replacement of refreshment.

After Stemple hung the medal from her hospital IV pole, other patients said they wanted medals too. That got Stemple thinking. “A medal is a simple way to give a positive message,”she told pilotonline. com. And so was born her charity-We Finish Together, which collects medals from strangers一runners, dancers, swimmers, singers, and even spelling bee winners—and donates them to all sorts of people in need.

Receivers have included hospital patients and homeless people, and old soldiers. Part of the process involves the donor writing a personalized note on the ribbon(丝带).“This gives them a connection to someone," says Stemple. “If they receive a medal, they know someone   cares. ”

A simple medal is really important? Yes,says Joan Musarra, who suffers from a serious illness.“I opened my package containing my new medal and the notes of positive, warm thoughts.I was deeply moved,“she wrote to Stemple.“At that moment,I was sitting on much to me to feel that I am not alone.”

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other things, one becomes happy and the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.

People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, hurt many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation (模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its owners. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when they realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.

Although in fact it is mainly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they want to get some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they do something wrong, no one will excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.

Caleb Anderson is a kid unlike any other. While most students his age are preparing for 7th grade, Caleb-from Marietta, Georgia-is starting his sophomore year of college.

The 12-year-old student is currently enrolled at Chattahoochee Technical College, where he is on track to earn his bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering in two years, according to CBS News. “I'm not really smart," Caleb told the outlet. “I just grasp information quickly. So, if I learn quicker, then I get ahead faster."But Caleb isn't just shooting for a diploma-he has his eyes set on joining the Georgia Institute of Technology or the Massachusetts Institute for Technology, which he hopes will help him get an internship(实习期) with Tesla and Space X founder Elon Musk.

David was about 8 when he learned how to swim. He got so good that he eventually picked up free diving, a sport where divers hold their breath until resurfacing instead of using breathing equipment. He never imagined nearly two decades later he would come to use that skill in such a way.

It is an extraordinary act of courage, but to have the moment caught on camera for the world to see is something else entirely. The scene was filmed by someone on the same boat and was put online. The video was shared immediately by national and global media.

That August day began with David boating around with his friends. They spotted a woman driving a bright red Mazda heading right into high water. David and his crew tried to warn her to stop, but by then it was too late, and the car had already slid under water.

In the moments before David jumped into those muddy flood waters to tear the roof off the car with his bare hands, his thought process was short. In fact, he didn’t have one.

“The car was sinking fast,” David says. “There was no time to think. It had to be done.”

Up until recently, David hadn’t reunited with the woman he saved. He was perfectly fine with saving a stranger and remaining unknown to her.

Still to this day, even after the attention the video received, after the media from all over the globe landed on his front yard, David doesn’t think it a big deal. “I think I was just lucky,” David says, smiling. “I happened to be at the right place at the right time.”
