A Kenyan teacher who gave away . most of his monthly salary (工资)to poor people has won a $1 -million Global Teacher Prize.

In 2016, Peter Tabichi came to Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School, a public school, in a faraway Kenya s Rift Valley. The school had just a single computer and had problems connecting to the Internet. It had no library or laboratory, as well. To make matters worse, the students came from poor families where basics like food and clothing were hard to come by. While these difficulties would have caused most people to leave quickly, Tabichi stayed.

Realizing that starving kids make for poor students, the teacher began using as much as 80 percent of his monthly salary to buy food and learning objects for them. He set up a science club to get kids interested in the topic. “Our laboratory does not have everything, but I encourage them to think wider and use what we can get locally. ”

Tabichi and other four teachers regularly visit low-achieving, at-risk, students at their homes to provide one- on-one help and to understand the difficulties these children face daily.   Tabichi also encourages parents to allow girls to continue their high-school education.

Tabichi's efforts have made a difference. School registration (注册)has more than doubled to almost 400 now since he came . In 2017, 16 of the 59 graduating students went to college, while in 2018, the number rose to 26. In 2017 , five students qualified(有资格)for the Intel ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair). This year, two other students will compete in the 2019 Intel ISEF to be held in Phoenix, Arizona.

The teacher, however, owes his success to his students, saying,"I am only here because of what my students have achieved. This prize gives them a chance. It tells the world that they can do anything. " As would be expected, Tabichi plans to spend the prize money on his school community and to feed the poor.

Emest Owusu was 13 in 1980 when he was given the opportunity to appear in the audience of a BBC show, and ask Thatcher how she felt about being called the Iron Lady. This encounter re-emerged in a BBC’s programme recently.

At the time of their meeting, Owusu was on free school meals, living on a public estate in Brixton, south London, where he and his sister were being raised by their mother Rose, a struggling hairdresser.

Now 57, Owusu looks remarkably similar even with a greying beard. But his life has been transformed. The father of three is a human resources director, and the first black captain of the Addington golf club in its 110-year history. As a black guy, it is about breaking the glass ceiling.

Speaking in its clubhouse, Owusu describes his rise in social status (地位) as a “Thatcherite Journey”. And he says it began by asking the woman herself. “To this day it still has an impact. My confidence changed from that sliding-door moment. Something about her connected with me.”

Thatcher told Owusu she enjoyed being called the Iron Lady. “I think it’s rather a praise, don’t you?” she said, “Because so often people have said to me if you’re in your job you’ve got to be soft and warm and human, but you’ve got to have a touch of steel.” Owusu recalls the moment, “I just remember her eye contact. She was answering me, not the camera. She welcomed the question saying you’ve got to be firm in this world. And that stuck with me.”

After the show was broadcast, Owusu said he became “a little hero in Brixton for a good three months”. Owusu added, “It all gave me extra confidence. Doors might not have opened so quickly. It was one of those key moments to make you do things maybe you wouldn’t otherwise have done.”

Lloyd Black decided to join the Anytime Fitness gym in Semmes, Alabama last year after he found himself struggling to accomplish simple household tasks. The 91-year-old man hoped that joining a gym might help him build strength and reduce his aches and pains. Over the past year, Black has been faithfully coming to the gym three times a week. His overalls (工装裤) really catch plenty of attention. He says that he prefers to wear overalls during his workouts because they are comfortable, and he has “trouble keeping his trousers up” other-wise.

When Black first joined Anytime Fitness, gym manager Ashley Seaman said he could barely last 10 minutes on the treadmill (跑步机) without becoming winded. Now, however, the senior can effortlessly do power walking for thirty minutes before moving on to his workout routine. As a means of praising Black for his advance, Seaman recently named Black “Mem-ber of the Month”.

He also takes time to help other seniors new to the gym learn how to use the weightlifting machines. “He's just a friendly soul. He will go to the other elderly members and show them how to use the machines,” Seaman shared in a post on the gym's Facebook page. “Someone like him always encourages others to keep it up and include fitness in their life,” the post reads. “Seeing him work out three times a week in his overalls brightens our day!”

As a result of his work at the gym, Black finds it easier to mow (割) the seven acres of grass at his house and tool around in his woodworking shop. He experiences less daily dis-comfort and moves more easily. He always says, “Age is just a number and it doesn't mean you can't get into the gym.”
