While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some elementary school students in Auckland, New Zealand. They became the world’s first kids to be “taught” by a digital teacher, Will. Before you start imagining a human-like robot walking around the classroom, Will is just an avatar(化身) that turns up on the students’ desktop, tablet, or smartphone screen when called.

Thanks to a digital camera and microphone, the avatar not only responds to questions the kids may have ,but also picks up non-verbal signals. For example, if a student smiles at Will, he responds by smiling back. This two-way communication not only helps draw the students’ attention, but also allows the program’s developers to monitor their involvement(参与) and make changes if needed.

Vector’s Chief Digital Officer, Nikhil Ravishankar, believes that Will-like avatars could be a novel way to attract the attention of the next generation. He says, “Using a digital human is a very popular method to deliver new information to people, and I have a lot of hope in this technology as a means to deliver rich and educational experience in the future.” Greg Cross, the Chief Business Officer for Soul Machines, states that kids who have grown up in this digital time adapt(适应) to new technology quickly, and he hopes to develop the idea of digital humans in the area of educate further.

The program, in place since August 2018, has been a great success so far. However, no matter how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human edueators any time soon. For one, the avatar’s knowledge base is severely limited. But more importantly, even the smartest digital avatars could never predict and react to all the unexpected situations that educators have to deal with on a daily basis. However, it could come in handy as a “personal teacher”, providing kids with one-on-one help on the subjects or even topics.

ABC News: Parents who want to pick up their kids at school in one New Jersey district now can submit to iris(虹膜)scans, as the technology that helps keep our nation’s airports and hotels safe begins to make its way further into American lives.

The Freehold Borough School District launched this high-techsecurity system on Monday with funding from the Department of Justice as part of a study on the system’s effectiveness.

As many as four adults can be authorized to pick up each child in the district, order to be authorized to come into school, they will be asked to register with the district’s iris recognition security and visitor management system. At this point, the New Jersey program is not a must.

If someone tries to slip in behind an authorized person, the system causes an alarm and red flashing lights in the front office. The entire process takes just seconds.

This kind of technology is already at work in airports around the country like Orlando International Airport, where the program has been in operation since July. It has 12,000 subscribers who pay $79.95 for the convenience of submitting to iris scans rather than going through lengthy security checks.

An iris scan is said to be more accurate than a fingerprint because it records 240 unique details- far more than the seven to twenty-four details that are analyzed in fingerprints. The chances of being misidentified by an iris scan are about one in 1.2 million and just one in 1. 44 trillion if you scan both eyes.

Phil Meara, the Freehold District official, said that although it was expensive, the program would help schools across the country move into a new frontier in child protection. “This is all part of a larger emphasis, here in New Jersey, on school, he said, We chose this school because we were looking for a typical slightly urban school to launch the system.”

Meara applied for a $369,000 grant on behalf of the school district and had the eye scanners installed in two grammar schools and one middle school. So far, 300 of the nearly 1, 500 individuals available to pick up a student from school have registered for the eye scan system.

One day, a teacher entered his classroom and asked his students to prepare for a fun test. They were filled with anticipation for the exam to begin.

The teacher handed out the exams with the text facing down, as usual. Once he handed them all out, he asked the students to turn over the papers. To everyone's surprise, there were no questions just a black dot (点) or circle in the center of the paper.

The teacher, seeing the expression on everyone's face, said, “I want you to write down what you see on the paper.”

The students got started on the task.

At the end of the class, the teacher took all of the papers; and started reading each of them in front of all the students. All of them described the black dot, trying to explain its position in the center of the paper.

After all had been read, the teacher asked, “Why no one wrote about the white part of the paper?”

Then he added, “I’m not going to grade you on this. I just wanted to give you something to think about. Does the same thing happen in our lives? Do we usually pay attention to the black dots in our life, such as the health problems that worry us, the difficult relationship with family members and the disappointment with friends?”

“Actually, the dark dots are very small when compared to everything we have in our lives, but they are the ones that pollute our minds,” he concluded. “Take your eyes away from the black dots in your lives. Enjoy each of your happy moments that life gives you.”

I don’t know about you, but I used to hate school.

However, there’s a school in Penang that makes learning so enjoyable that its students look forward to attending classes every day. Some students even threatened their parents they’d run away from home if they missed any of the school activities! And it’s all owing to the school principal. Who is this legend, you might ask?

He’s S. Sangga, a 57-year-old headmaster at SJK (T) Sungai Ara, Penang. The school started adopting the fun learning approach since Sangga was transferred to the school in 2011. A few floors in the school had been painted with games like snakes and ladders, as well as teng teng. Not only that, there are particular reading corners as well as computers set up just for the students to discover and learn about new things! Since then, the students have been arriving extra early at 6: 30 a. m., just to have some fun before classes start at 7: 40 a. m!

If you think that’s all, you’re wrong.

Mr Sangga is an supporter for environmental protection and preservation. The school takes the students for walks in the surrounding areas every Friday, and they’ll take them to collect garbage in selected areas every Saturday. The students have since become responsible “anti trash heroes” by making a stand for our environment. The school has also banned the use of plastic, as well as fast food and junk food. Not only do the students practice this at school, but they start to take their knowledge home to educate their family!

Sadly, Mr Sangga will retire in three years, and he hopes that the students and teachers would continue their practice.
