Smith College Precollege Programs offer intellectually inspiring and unique opportunities to high school girls who wish to pursue their academic interests in the classroom and beyond. Annually,   these   programs   offer   over   225   young   women   the   freedom to   explore   challenging subjects while living and studying with other motivated students from around the world.

College Admission Workshop:   This new one-week program is for rising high school juniors and seniors who are beginning to look at colleges. It helps you gain a competitive advantage when you are applying to colleges. You can know how to write a college-level essay, excel in a college admission interview and give an introductory speech.

Summer Science and Engineering Program: Do you want to conduct college-level research? This program is a unique four-week residential program that will give you a taste of both college life and college-level science. You will attend small classes taught by top faculty (学院) members. The classes also have a current Smith College student working as an intern (实习生).

Discovering Women's History: This program allows you to explore the lives and writings of notable women of the 19th and 20th centuries. You will read the private papers of Sylvia Plath, Gloria Steinem and Virginia Woolf. You will also examine poet Emily Dickinson's personal diaries and letters. You will learn archival (档案的) research skills.

Field Studies for Sustainable(可持续的) Futures: This program is for students who want to explore their interest in environmental protection in a directed way. You will learn about sustainable living and environmental science. Much of the program is conducted in the field, and you will engage in a variety of activities including hiking, visiting local farms and learning about sustainable food and agriculture.

Application requirements

Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis. Applicants who submit a completed application can expect an admission decision within 5 – 7 business days.

·Include basic contact information from you and your parent(s) or guardian.

·Tell us why you want to take the course and a little about yourself through a short-answer essay.

·Share a piece of writing, video or social media content that reveals something about yourself (optional).

·Submit the $35 application fee.

·Students must be at least 14 years old or older.

Cancellation and refunds (退款)

Application fees and enrollment deposits are nonrefundable. All course cancellations requests must be made in writing to precollegeonline@usc.edu. Any tuition paid to the university will be refunded, not including fees and deposits, if requested by the application deadline for the related course.

The university will not refund tuition for Online Pre-College Exploration courses for students who are removed from the program due to breaking our Letter of Understanding for Online Participation and our Student Code of Conduct.

Pre-College Program Courses

The Harvard Pre-College Program will be hosting all courses online for Summer 2021. To encourage interactive learning, class sizes are small and typically range from 12 to 18 students. In this collegial setting, you will practice the art of healthy debates, learn to communicate clearly on complex topics, and deliver presentations on your own research, all under the guidance of Harvard instructors for a true Ivy League experience. At the end of the program, you will receive a written evaluation from your instructor, as well as a Harvard transcript with a grade of AR or NM (“requirements met” or “requirements not met”). Please note: You need to attend every online class in its entirety to receive a passing grade of “Met All Requirements”.

What is care? How can and do communities encourage care as a tool for building healing and hope? This course requires students not only to ask how they might engage in caring acts with their own communities, but to complete a locally based community project that brings care.

This course introduces students to college writing by taking them through the steps required to complete a five page analytic essay. Students read a range of classic and contemporary short stories, and develop strategies for careful close reading via class discussion and in-class exercises.

36 hours of art course

with the New Arts Club — London

A good chance to learn under famous artist Oksana Leadbitter, and her New Arts Club.

Run according to your timetable, this part-time course is 36⁺ hours of painting that is fit for anyone from beginners to more experienced painters. You must sign up for no less than 36 hours, for which you need to pay $356.33.

All art materials are provided, including paints, brushes and more. All you need to do is bring yourself, and a wish to learn and meet new people. Oksana will guide you through a series of painting styles and skills, showing how a painting is done and offering frequent support to you. She gives special attention to the easiest ways of achieving the effects you want. She has her own style of teaching that allows people to make progress in a short period of time.

You will not need to attend every class. The course works on a by-hour basis, meaning you can use your hours as slowly or quickly as you wish.

Come and join us every Thursday at a spare room of the beautiful St Sofia Cathedral in Bayswater, London.

Courses:

10:00-12:00: Adult class

12:00-15:00: Children’s class

19:00-22:00: Adult evening class
