A day in the life of 18-year-old David Lanster is full of teenage activities: school, baseball practice, homework. And then he starts cooking. “Some nights I’m up until 1 a.m. making pies, or even later if we’re cooking beef,” said the student at Ransom Everglades High School in Florida, US.

For the past year, Lanster and Kelly Moran, his classmate, have been hosting fancy dinner parties at Lanster’s parents’ home. Their meals have 17 courses and are all made by them. Their guests used to give them gifts to thank them, until the pair decided to do something nice for charity. “We got some really great Miami Heat tickets, a nice watch, and many kitchen machines,” Lanster said. “But we wanted to make this something positive for people rather than us.”

Lanster and Moran focused on Common Threads, a charity(慈善机构) that helps to teach kids in poor neighborhood to cook and make healthy eating choices. The young cooks ask their guests to give however much they want as payment for their meals. It all goes to Common Threads because Lanster’s parents cover their food costs. After their last 12-person event, Lanster and Moran gave $1,600 to the charity. Now, they’re taking their show out of the kitchen and on the road. Lanster and Moran have started to organize private dinner parties in a similar way: the host pays for the ingredients(食材), and the guests make a donation (捐赠) to a charity.

Outside the kitchen, the two are busy preparing their college applications. Neither is sure what they will do in the future, but they’ve promised their parents that they’ll leave cooking alone until they finish high school.

Elizabeth Anionwu, who has received four honorary degrees for her excellent work in nursing, has devoted her life to improving the lives of thousands in the black community who are suffering with sickle cell disease.

Born to an Irish woman and a Nigerian man, her own upbringing was tarnished by racial discrimination and cruelty. Soon after her birth in 1947, she was sent away to a children’s home run by nuns (修女) who were, at times, very unkind indeed. Once, she was made to stand with a dirty wet sheet over her head as a punishment for wetting the bed.

But a caring nursing nun she met at the age of four inspired her career in nursing. “I had painful eczema (湿疹), which the nuns would treat with a special medicine and cover with bandages,” she explains. “Other nuns would tear them off in a hurry and my skin would break and bleed. But one nice nun treated me very gently and I never felt a thing. Later on, I discovered she was a nurse and I decided that’s what I wanted to be.” At 16 she became a school nurse assistant, which was the start of a 50-year career as a nurse and professor.

In the early 70s, Anionwu had her first encounter with sickle cell anaemia-a painful disease found mostly in African and Caribbean families-which at the time was often overlooked. Families had no information about how to cope with their illness or the symptoms to look out for, so Anionwu took action, raising awareness of the disease and setting up the Sickle Cell Society. It’s then that she became the first sickle cell and thalassemia (地中海贫血症) specialist in Britain.

Elizabeth Anionwu has spent her life as a nurse and tutor, working with black and minority communities in London. In 2019, she was presented with the Pride Of Britain’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her great services to nursing.

A long, long time ago,Nyame the sky god hid all the stories in a box high in the sky. No person or animal had any story to tell,so everyone was very sad.

Then one day,an old spider,Anansi, made a long web all the way to the sky. Anansi climbed the web to the sky and asked Nyame,“Can I have the stories please?I'll do anything if you give us the stories."Nyame thought for a moment. Then he answered,“Fine. First I will give you a task. Bring me three things:a snake,a leopard, and bees. Then I will give you the stories." Nyame laughed so loudly that everyone on Earth could hear him!Anansi climbed slowly back to Earth and told his wife, Aso, what had happened. She listened carefully. Then she said,"I have a plan."

Later that day,Anansi followed Aso's plan. First,he found a long stick. After that,he went near Snake's home and said loudly,“This is very long, very long indeed!"When Shake heard Anansi talking, he said,“What is so long?"Anansi answered,“I'm sorry,Snake. This stick is longer than you are. “Snake answered proudly. “It is not!I'm a very long snake! You will see that I am longer.” He moved next to the stick. Then,Anansi quickly used his web to tie Snake to the stick.

Immediately,Anansi climbed back to the sky and gave the snake to Nyange. Bur Nyame only said,“I told you to bring three things.Where are the other two?"Then Nyame laughed,“Ha ha ha!” Anansi sadly went back to Earth with no stories. He asked his wife,“How will I ever obtain a leopard?"

Again,Aso had a plan, and Anansi followed it. First,he made a hole in the ground and put sticks over it so no one could see the hole. The next day,Anansi went back to the hole and Leopard had fallen inside!Anansi used his web to quickly tie him up. He took Leopard to Nyame. Nyame looked surprised this time. He said,“You still must bring the bees!"Again,Anansi asked Aso for help. Again,he followed her plan. The next day he found a tree with bees in it. He quickly threw water on the tree and on himself. Then he said to the bees,“It is raining!Quick--get inside my gourd(葫芦). It will keep you dry.”So the bees fell for his trick and all flew into Anansi’s gourd. With a big smile,Anansi used his web to close the gourd, so the bees could not get out.

Finally,Anansi took the bees to Nyame. Nyame was not laughing anymore. Nyame kept his promise and gave Anansi all of the stories. Very carefully,Anansi carried all the stories back down to Earth. And after he told each story,he said,“Stories are for telling, not for keeping in boxes.”

It was Tracey who first noticed the man who looked strikingly like her brother-in-law, who also worked as a carpenter. With brown eyes and a strong nose, he could have been the twin of her husband’s brother, Clifford. But Tracey didn’t think much more about the likeness until she discovered her husband and Clare, who shared the same birthday, even had been born at the same hospital. That night, Tracey and Craig sat up in their queen-size bed, talking and drinking black tea until the sun rose. It was a huge mental leap from recognizing a series of likeness to wondering if he was switched at birth.

After a few days, Tracey got her chance to secretly snap a picture of Clare and sent to Craig. Over the next few days, all family members of Craig shook their heads in disbelief about the extreme facial similarity. Clifford, the one who was almost identical, desired to do a DNA test to determine whether it is true or not. However, when the couple approached Clare to tell him about their thought, he was reluctant to admit that he wasn’t the person he’d always been, regarding it as a terrible joke. “Everyone looks like someone.” He thought.

Months later, when Craig got results comparing his DNA with Clifford’s, he called Clare first. But Clare, even while he felt a wave of sadness, wasn’t convinced that the news applied to him.

But the truth floated eventually. Years later, Clare decided to take an identity test. When Clare’s test results arrived in the post, he called Craig. Clare had laid out his results on the kitchen counter next to Clifford’s. “Everything was a match,” Clare said. He and Clifford had been brothers. There was silence on both ends of the phone. For the first time in his life, he didn’t want to go to work. Clare moved from his bed to the sofa, the sofa to the bed, sometimes stopping to sob in the kitchen, often drinking and smoking along days alone, refusing to believe the truth.
