An international team of researchers found employees who endure what is known as “abusive supervision” are more likely to behave poorly on purpose by messing up tasks, arriving late, taking long breaks and putting in minimal effort.

The authors of the study, published in the Journal of Management, sought to answer why horrible bosses make employees less willing to show what is known as organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), or commitment to the company outside of their contractual obligations. That could include helping colleagues or volunteering for unusual work hours. They also assessed its effect on a worker’s tendency to harm the organization, by displaying counterproductive (反作用的) work behavior (CWB).

To find out more, and uncover which negative outcome bullying (欺凌) behavior is more likely to cause, researchers from Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in China, Renmin University of China and Swinburne University of Technology in Australia cooperated and analyzed 427 existing studies. They found workers acted out either because they felt they were being treated unfairly in the workplace, or felt stressed and this affected their ability to perform as expected. An employee who felt they were a victim of injustice tended more towards reluctance to show OCB. Stressed workers, meanwhile, were more associated with CWB.

Employers who worried supervisors are affecting productivity can take steps to ease issues by regularly training managers, introducing policies which cope with workplace injustices and helping workers to deal with stress.

This is not the first study to suggest unkind practices can affect the well-being of workers. The paper follows a study published in the European Heart Journal last year, which showed employees who suffer bullying are more likely to develop heart diseases than those who aren’t. Bullying and violence are common at workplaces and those exposed to these stressors are at higher risk.

Your attitude plays a big part in your everyday life and can influence how your life may turn out in the future. If you have a good attitude, you’ll be the kind of person who works hard and you'll live the kind of life many would admire. Here are some tips which can help you improve your attitude.

Spend time with those who share your positive attitude. This is a must if you want to improve your attitude. The people you surround yourself with most of the time will reflect upon your life. So always make sure that these people share your positive attitude and lift you.

When you take action, always take steps to act with a purpose, to that your actions are in line with your values. For example, Walt Disney’s main purpose is to “make people happy”. So next time you act, think of your purpose and improve your attitude while doing so!

Being polite when given help or asking for it isn’t a hard thing, yet so often we forget these simple words, especially with those closest to us. If you want to improve your attitude, use “please” and “thank you” every time you’re given the opportunity.

If you want to improve your attitude to life and to those around you, stop comparing yourself with others. It's human to compare our lives with others', but when we do it too often we can drag(拖)ourselves down. So spare yourself the worry and stop comparing; only focus(集中)on your own life and you’ll be much happier in the process.

Gratefulness is one of the most powerful attitudes in your life. If you want a better life, give thanks for all that you have each and every day. Gradually, you'll receive more things to be thankful for!

So how’s your attitude today? Does it need a little fine tuning?

New friendships don’t just happen. Many of us struggle to meet people and develop quality connections. Whatever your age or situations, though, with a little effort and willingness to step outside of your comfort zone, you can easily make friends. The following tips will help you start a new friendship.

If you want to make friends, you first need to put yourself out there somehow in order to meet people. If you just sit alone, friends might come to you, but that’s not likely. For example, if you’re still in school, sit somewhere with other people. It doesn’t have to be a crowded table, but try to choose one with at least two other people. Remember, friends seldom come knocking on your door while you sit at home playing on your laptop.

Join a club to meet new people. This is a great way to find other people who have common interests. You don’t need to have a lot of common interests with people in order to make friends with them. If you like a certain topic. try searching for a location where you can meet people who share that interest. For example. you could join the science club at school, the marching band, or any other shared-interest group. Once you find someone who has similar interests to yours, you can exchange phone numbers or email addresses and keep in touch.

Volunteering is also a wonderful way to meet new friends. Do an online search or call charitable organizations in your area to find volunteering opportunities near you. For example, you might devote your time at a local nursing home, hospital, animal shelter, or non-profit organization. By working together, you build connections with people, and know people who care about the same things you care about.

Making friends is about developing and having a social connection which makes people want to be a part of your life. It can seem difficult at times, but often the best way to make it happen is to just go ahead and do it.

Home sweet home - this phrase arouses all sorts of images and feelings. The place you call home might be a house, an apartment, a tent or any of a countless variety of places. But did you know that the condition of your living space can have an impact on your emotions and even on your mental health? By controlling some of these variables, you can help to achieve a more peaceful life.

It goes without saying that the lighting in your room or in your house can affect your mood. If the lighting is too weak, it can have a negative effect on your emotions, and your mood may end up matching the dark atmosphere. Artificial light may not do the trick, however. It is better to open your curtains because natural sunlight makes your whole day brighter.

You have to do more than just remove poisonous substances from your home. To ensure good mental health, surround yourself with nature. Numerous studies have demonstrated that the presence of green plants in your home can improve your mood.

Let’s all admit it: We have trouble keeping our space clean. Somehow stuff just tends to pile up. But this problem involves more than just aesthetics (美感). It doesn’t just look terrible: it makes you feel terrible. A cluttered room both reveals stress and causes stress. Disorder can indicate that you’re too busy to keep things tidy, but then looking at a mess can lead to more stress. Straightening up doesn’t have to take all day - just take 10 or 15 minutes and put a few things away. You’ll be surprised how much better you’ll feel.

The color palette (用色风格) of your environment does more than passively reflect your color preferences. It also has an active influence on your mood and even your mental health. Choosing colors that create a calm atmosphere can be a type of therapy.

The sky is the limit to ways you can make your environment beneficial to good mental health. You could put up photos of your family and friends or post encouraging notes from people that show how much they love you. Just remember: Your surroundings can make your “home sweet home” even sweeter.
