HOW TO READ A POEM

There’s really only one reason why poetry has gotten a reputation for being so “difficult”: It demands your full attention. 【小题1】

Follow Your Ears. It’s okay to ask “What does it mean?” when you are reading a poem. But it’s even better to ask “How does it sound?” 【小题2】 Even if you can’t understand a single thing about a poem’s “subject” or “theme”, you can always say something — anything — about the sound of the words.

【小题3】 OK, we’re not saying you have to shout it from the rooftops. If you’re embarrassed and want to lock yourself in the attic (阁楼) and read the poem in the quietest whisper, go ahead. But reading aloud is really an effective way to understand a poem, because reading even part of it aloud can totally change your perspective on how it works

Read in Different Places. Just like music, the experience of poetry changes depending on your mood and the environment. Read in as many different places as possible: at the beach, on a mountain, in the subway. 【小题4】

Think Like a Poet. Here’s a fun exercise. Go through the poem one line at a time, covering up the next line with your hand so you can’t see it. Put yourself in the poet’s shoes: 【小题5】 If you start to think like this, you’ll be able to appreciate all the different choices that go into making a poem.

A.Be Patient.
B.Read It Aloud.
C.If all else fails, treat it like a song.
D.If I had to write a line to come after this line, what would I put?
E.So if you don’t get it,set the poem aside and come back to it later.
F.Sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery for a poem to really come alive.

Exercise.

Take a 15-to-30-minute walk every day—or dance, jog, or bike if you prefer. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active. But make yourself do it anyway. Once you get in the exercise habit, it won’t take long to notice a difference in your mood.

Cherish yourself with good nutrition.

Depression can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat. If depression has affected your eating, you’ll need to be extra mindful of getting the right food. 【小题2】. So eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don’t feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going).

Identify troubles.

Try to make out any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what’s got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. 【小题3】 . If there’s no one to tell, pouring your heart out to a journal works just as well.

What do you do when you receive an invitation to an event that you do not want to attend or that you cannot attend due to your busy schedule? In that case, we simply can’t act on everything our heart feels. 【小题1】 Here are some right ways to decline (拒绝) an invitation without hurting others’ feelings.

Respond in a timely manner.

【小题2】 It’s OK to put off responding if you’re unsure at first, but give yourself a deadline to figure it out — and stick to it. Always respond to invitations in a timely manner.

【小题3】

It’s OK to say you’re sorry that you can’t make an event, but it’s better to redefine it as a positive. Rather than apologizing, say how happy you are that they invited you and that while you can’t make it this time, you look forward to getting together with them in the future.

Don’t say “maybe”.

Procrastinating (拖延) by saying “maybe” usually means it’s a no. 【小题4】 Saying “maybe” is a way of making yourself feel better, but it leaves the other person hanging, which is unkind.

Don’t try to control the other person’s feelings.

There’s the assumption that we can decline without hurting anyone else’s feelings, but we can’t ensure the other person’s experience. They may feel sad or disappointed when you decline,. but that’s OK. 【小题5】

A.Focus on the positive.
B.Be honest but not too honest.
C.Don’t leave the host hanging.
D.It’s fine to decline via digital means.
E.Most people will understand that life just gets busy.
F.So just go ahead and say no if that’s really what you mean.
G.Instead, we should learn how to politely say “no” to an invitation.
