Next time you’re in a public place, take a look around you, and count how many people are using their phones. I can tell you now that it is probably more than half, whether you’re on public transport, in a cafe or simply walking down the street.

I’m not saying that I am not an example of this, but it always amazes me how people can spend so much time on their phones without actually talking to anyone in particular.

For example, I recently visited London and travelled on the tube while I was there. Apart from the people asleep, almost everybody else was on their phones, and because of the nature of the tube, it is difficult not to see exactly what they are all doing. Of course, being underground it is difficult for you to get any signal, which rules out texting or using the Internet, but there is still plenty you can use your phones for. People were playing games, reading articles and listening to music, and I am sure that as soon as they emerged from the train station they would start texting or calling or checking their emails.

Recently, my smartphone broke and had to be sent off to the warehouse for repair for a week or so. In the meantime I had to use a really old, basic phone just to keep me in touch with my family and friends. All I could do on this phone was send text messages, make calls and play one game. And I loved it. I loved being free from the Internet, and I really didn’t mind not having constant updates about what my friends were doing or what the latest celebrity story was. It allowed me to spend more lime taking in my surroundings.

However, I knew that as soon as I got my smartphone hack I would be one of those people once again. Perhaps I should just go back to using the basic phone and forget my smartphone.

Severely disabled people may soon be able to use their noses to write, drive a wheelchair or surf the Internet, thanks to a device (装置) developed by doctors in Israel.
The device will be used by breathing in and out through the nose, according to a study. Healthy people who tested the device quickly learned to play computer games and write sentences by sniffing. Encouraged by the results, the researchers decided to test their device on people who are paralyzed (瘫痪) but whose intelligence remains normal. Ten paralyzed who tested the device quickly learned to use their noses to write words, open a webpage, copy words and put them into a search engine.
With their success in helping severely disabled people to communicate * the researchers decided to make use of the new technology to design an electric wheelchair to be driven by sniffs.
Ten healthy people easily mastered sniff—driving a wheelchair through a maze (迷宫), and a 30-year-old man who had been paralyzed from the neck down for six years was as good a sniff-driver as the healthy participants at his second attempt. In other words, a paralyzed person could use the sniff controller to drive an electric wheelchair.
At the moment, sniff-controlled technology is still in the stage of development, and the Weizmann Institute has already applied for a patent on the device. "Ill be very happy if it can help us to make money, but the real problem is that I hope someone will develop it, because this would help a lot of people," said Sobel, one of the lead researchers of the study.
【小题1】What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce a new invention.
B.To equip the disabled with life skills.
C.To show the nose's special functions.
D.To instruct doctors to apply for a patent.
【小题2】In the test, the paralyzed people with normal intelligence can use their nose to ______.
A.type long sentences quickly
B.play computer games easily
C.enter a website without much difficulty
D.communicate with others successfully
【小题3】With the help of the sniffing device, a 30-year-old disabled man ______.
A.spent six years learning how to drive a wheelchair
B.failed to drive through the maze at his first attempt
C.took the wheelchair controlled by healthy participants
D.managed to drive an electric wheelchair by sniffing
【小题4】From the last paragraph, we can infer that the sniff-controlled technology ______.
A.will be applied to other fields of research
B.needs further developing to serve more people
C.has become an important patented invention
D.shows the wisdom and talents of Israel doctors

As we face climate change, a new digital tool helps expand carbon-free energy without damaging the wildlife habitats. In Maine, the Renewable Energy Siting Tool is a newly released map that allows the clean energy developers to identify the sites for solar and wind projects while avoiding those with sensitive wildlife habitats. Sarah Haggerty, the lead developer, notes that the tool came into being thanks to the data provided by Maine’s Depar-ment of Environmental Protection, state biologists, clean energy developers, as well as financial support from the bank.

Based on data on land-use, habitats, energy resources, etc., the tool uses a traffic-light model to identify sites suitable for development and sites to avoid. Fields like landfills are shown in green, wetland areas or rare species habitats are shown in red, while yellow shown areas indicate that closer examination of project impacts is necessary.

The tool was developed after Maine passed a law requiring that 80% of Maine’s electricity come from renewable resources by 2030. Haggerty says, “We are in urgent need of this tool to help us fight climate change in a way that reduces impact on our valuable natural resources.” Maine is the most forested state in the nation, and agriculture, natural resources, and nature tourism play important roles in its economy. Yet the state is among the top five in losing its farmland to development. It makes little sense to develop clean energy projects at the expense of farmland.

When developers announce a clean energy project, they often face disagreement from community members who are concerned about the loss of valuable farmland or the impact on wildlife. This can discourage investors and slow the transition to renewable energy. Luckily, this tool can help developers speed up the development of clean energy by quickly identifying suitable land. Clean energy development needn’t come at the expense of wildlife.

【小题1】What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.How the new tool works.B.How the new tool is adjusted.
C.How the new tool is developed.D.How the new tool collects data.
【小题2】What is the function of the new tool?
A.To protect Maine’s renewable resources.B.To apply clean energy to wildlife habitats.
C.To improve the effective use of clean energy.D.To balance clean energy and wildlife habitats.
【小题3】Which word best describes Haggerty’s attitude to the new tool?
A.Skeptical.B.Tolerant.
C.Conservative.D.Positive.
【小题4】From which is the text probably taken?
A.A news review.B.A science magazine.
C.A travel brochure.D.A geography textbook.

Today, many people spend a lot of time reading online. Whether reading news or e—books, people are spending more time eyeballing screens.

While online reading opens up a vast amount of knowledge to people, there are some drawbacks, too. This includes eyestrain, headaches as well as difficulty in focusing on the text. Now a new reading system has been intended to help people overcome these issues and read faster online.

A reading system called Bionic Reading, which was developed by Swiss designer Renato Cassutt, was constructed with the belief that your brain can read faster than your eyes. The system involves showing the first few letters of each word in bold (以粗体显示) which actually allows your eyes to skip over parts of the text while your brain fills in what is missing. It is incredible how reading this feels like finally unlocking 100 percent of people’s brain.

Cassutt came up with the system by accident. He was working on designing a book in a foreign language and realized he could read it if he sectioned it off. He worked for six years to develop Bionic Reading and is still working to perfect it.

Many people who want to strengthen their reading ability show interest in it, but more research is needed before it can be finally shown that the system improves reading. But people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (注意缺陷多动障碍) and dyslexia (阅读障碍) have confirmed that Bionic Reading can help them focus on and comprehend what they are reading.

Cassutt’s goal is to combine the system with all apps and online services. “In a digital world dominated (支配) by shallow forms of reading, Bionic Reading aims to encourage a more in—depth reading and understanding of written content,” he said. The Bionic Reader is available in the following apps, Reeder 5, Fiery Feeds, Lire, and Next App. The best way to know if it helps you read better online is to try it yourself and find out what it is all about.

【小题1】What is Bionic Reading designed to do?
A.Encourage more ways of obtaining knowledge.
B.Urge people to spend more time eyeballing screens.
C.Support struggling readers with comprehension skills.
D.Improve online reading by highlighting parts of the words.
【小题2】Who is reported to have benefited from the reading system?
A.Those with a hobby of reading.
B.Those with reading disabilities.
C.Those who work for the system.
D.Those who are addicted to e—books.
【小题3】Which of the following is recommended in the text?
A.Trying the system to read.
B.Becoming used to all forms of reading.
C.Increasing the efficiency of the system.
D.Making the system available to the public.
【小题4】Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Reading is sure to perfect our mind
B.Reading ability is of great significance
C.A new pioneering system betters online reading
D.Spending more time reading online is worthwhile
