Charity Cycling UK recently launched a campaign to raise awareness of dooring after discovering that many people don’t know what it is. Dooring is when a driver or passenger opens the door into another road user—typically cyclist—without looking for other road users.

Cycling UK chief executive Paul Tuohy told Gloucestershire Live: “Some people seem to see car dooring as a bit of a joke, but it’s not and can have serious consequences. Cycling UK wants to see great awareness made about the dangers of opening your car door carelessly, and people to be encouraged to look before they open.”

The charity says 2,009 of the 3,000 injuries were sustained by cyclists, resulting in five fatalities but says this might not be the full extent of the danger.

Cycling UK says not all car dooring incidents will be attended by police, so the charity has written to transport minister Jesse Norman calling for a public awareness campaign urging all car occupants, not just drivers, to look before opening vehicle doors. One of the ways the charity suggests is the “Dutch reach”, where people leaving a vehicle reach over and use the non-door side hand to open the door.

Cycling UK also suggests harsher laws and advice on safer road positioning for people who cycle.

Mr. Tuohy said: “In the Netherlands they are known for practicing a method, known sometimes as the ‘Dutch reach’, which we think could be successfully encouraged in the UK.”

“Cycling UK has written to the Department for Transport asking them to look into this, and highlight the dangers of ‘car dooring’ through a public awareness THINK style campaign.”

If you’re really concerned about opening a door into the path of a cyclist coming behind you, consider using what’s known as the “Dutch reach” to open the door. That will naturally turn you in your seat and give you a much better view of what’s coming up alongside in the car.

In 2005, Rachel O’ Neill was working full-time as an assistant for an engineering firm. While active and warm-hearted, she had never imagined doing any global volunteering. But after a trip to Malawi in Africa for her fiftieth birthday, she was impressed by the work done by the local girls to support their families. “I wanted a way to honor them,” she says.

An idea hit her one day and she persuaded her friends to make dresses with her and donated them to the girls in Malawi. Rachel hoped that the dresses donated and sent to the girls would build up their confidence and happiness. After all, all the girls are joyful the moment they receive the dresses and even happier while wearing them. Rachel and her friends achieved their goal in the first year. As word spread, donations poured in. In 2008, without previous experience, she started a nonprofit called Little Dresses for Africa, with a mission of getting simple homemade dresses to girls in poor communities. To date, more than 10 million dresses have been donated to the girls in 97 countries, and Africa remains a focus.

Local communities offer to network with the nonprofit to run a distribution(分配)center to distribute these donated dresses. It attracts a number of volunteers, many of whom have ever received the dresses. They make all the dresses themselves, sort out dresses and box dresses for shipments to other countries. Funds are also received to cover transportation costs.

“With a large population of girls under age 14 in Malawi,” Rachel says, “we are nowhere close to meeting all needs. We only ask people to use material of high quality and different colors,” Generous donations have allowed Little Dresses for Africa to address other needs, including building more than 85 wells and two primary schools. “I couldn’t have done any of this on my own, ” Rachel says. “Everyone’s contribution and generosity make a difference.”

We appreciate your interest in giving animals a hand! While helping others, volunteering gives you a way to learn, have fun and give back to your community. There are many ways to care for the animals at PAWS.

Youth Work Party

If you are ten years or older, you can join the Youth Work Party Team with a parent to work on different projects around PAWS in Lynnwood, WA. For example, you can build boxes for frightened, injured wildlife to hide in. Ask your parent to sign up to join a work party. If you are eighteen years or older, you can join the Youth Work Party Team independently.

PAWS walk

PAWS walk is our biggest fundraising event of the year, held at the end of the summer to raise money to care for the animals. You can collect money with the help of your family, friends and school, and then walk in the event.

Cookie Sale

Selling homemade dog cookies is a wonderful way to help the animals. PAWS can provide brochures to give out when you sell the cookies prepared by you and your parents, so people can learn about PAWS at the same time. You can find homemade dog cookie cooking instructions on the Internet or by checking out cookbooks for dogs at the library.

Movie Night

Invite friends, family, neighbors and classmates to watch your favorite animal movie, like Babe or Charlotte's Web. Ask them to bring an “entrance fee” of donations or supplies for the animals.

Thanks again for your interest in PAWS and helping animals. Share your ideas with your parents and invite a few friends to join you in helping make a difference for animals. If you have any questions, call 425-787-2500-261.

Hello. I'm Jan from Mrs. Lake's class. My class wants to work together to help the public. We think we have found a great way to do this. Last month we did a class project on the highways near our town. We learned about the Adopt-a-Highway Program. This program brings people together to pick up litter along the roads. We think it would be a great idea for all students in our school to join the program and adopt(收养) a highway.
Adopting a highway is not like adopting a pet. When a highway is adopted, only part of the highway is cared for by a group of people. The group agrees to work every week to keep its part of the highway clean. Each group gets its own sign that has the name of the group printed on it. The sign is put up at the side of the road. This sign lets drivers know who is keeping that area of the road clean.
The Adopt-a-Highway Program is a great way for people to help their environment look nicer. Also, the government does not have to send out as many road workers. This saves money. Finally, people may try harder to keep roads clean if they see people, especially teenagers like us, cleaning them up.
We will need helpers to care for our adopted highway. If you want to feel great and keep our roads clean, please come with your parents to the meeting next week. We will meet in Mrs. Lake's room on Wednesday at 6:00 P.M. At the meeting, we will talk about which roads are the dirtiest as a result of people's unkind acts. Then we'll try to pick an area to adopt and clean.
I look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Remember to keep our roads clean!
