On Thursday, I dropped my kid off at school and was on my way to San Francisco. On a curve, I passed what looked to be a _______ hawk in the middle of my lane. I took a sharp turn to go around it. I glanced _______ in my rear-view mirror and I thought I saw it move. I _______ and turned around. He was alive! I stopped the car, going over to him and picked him up, holding him in my arms. I took him quickly back-to my car _______ we both would be out of danger zone. Sitting with him in the car, I spoke calmly to him. had an animal in my arms that never had _______ with a human being before, let alone in one’s car. His eyes were brilliant _______ seemed in shock but not badly hurt. His feet were curled, which worried me bit but _______ he seemed in good shape.

I told him I was going to take him to someone who could help. I drove to a vet in Los Alamos who I have known and trusted for many years. We were about 20 minutes _______. The hawk’s energy seemed to be improving on the drive. He sat on my _______ the whole way there and when we arrived at the front of the vet, we waited for 15 minutes before they opened. I feel so grateful for those fifteen minutes! When I stopped the car he was looking directly at me. I moved my hand from the steering wheel and I could tell that my __________ moments made him nervous. He opened his mouth and seemed to be ready to __________ himself. So, we sat there and stared into each other’s eyes for 15 minutes! I wanted to __________ to him that he was in no danger and my only intention was love and for his __________. He seemed to understand. He closed his mouth after the first minute and relaxed on my lap, though staring into my eyes but without the intense air of __________.

When the vet assistant arrived and came up to the car the hawk got __________ and flew to the passenger seat. The vet then said, will be right back with crate(箱子)for him. Once again I looked into the amazing animal’s eyes and told him it was OK. He allowed me to pick him up and ____________ him to my lap. We stared at each other for a longer time.

When the assistant returned I placed him in the crate. He seemed to know everything was going to be OK. He trusted me and didn’t flap his wings or struggle. A(n) __________ came over me that felt like sweet sadness. I was sad to leave this awesome creature but was full of gratitude feeling so incredibly __________ with its presence.

What an awe-inspiring experience! I can still see those golden orange eyes that __________ into my soul. think I will see them for the rest of my life.

I later found out he was taken to the animal sanctuary(庇护所)near Dominical called Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary where he is well on his way to __________.

Bill Sumiel was having a tough Friday. It was October 2020, and the 71-year-old, who was dealing with kidney (肾) failure, found himself at a medical center 30 miles from home.

Sumiel was no stranger to the ________ of kidney disease. He’d suffered from diabetes (糖尿病) more than 20 years before, which ________ his kidney problems. He was on the transplant ________, but no matches had yet appeared. So he continued with his treatments and took a taxi to and from his ________.

Timothy Letts, 31, was driving north to visit a friend when his phone rang with the ________ for Sumiel’s ride home. The trip was out of Letts’s way. ________, he took the order.

When Sumiel got into the car, the pair got to ________. Sumiel ________ that he was searching for a kidney donor. Letts joked that he’d be a good donor (捐赠者), ________ that he didn’t drink or smoke. Sumiel ________, though he didn’t think much of it as they kept driving. Letts, however, couldn’t stop thinking about it. About a quarter-mile away from Sumiel’s house, Letts said, “I’d like to see if I could be a ________ to give you a kidney.”

Sumiel was touched by Letts’s ________, though he wondered if it had just been a(n) ________ moment. But Letts was ________ to his word. He got in touch with Sumiel just a few hours later, and by the next week, Letts had ________ the kidney transplant program. After a long screening process, the results were in: Letts was an ideal donor, and he and Sumiel were a perfect match.

Growing up in Scotland’s largest city, Eilidh Malcolm had never really considered a career in forestry. _______, she first choose for a life in rather damp surroundings. But after helping to establish Sea Life Loch Lomond, a career in the wood s soon came _______ the former aquarist (水产养殖者).

“I started to realize I was passionate about _______,   getting people outdoors and into the natural world, _______ for those who are living in urban areas,” the Glasgow native said.

Now based in and around her home city, Eilidh is _______ to working with those who have less opportunity to engage with nature. She said, “I think the last few years have really brought home for many people a _______ of the importance of getting outside for our health and wellbeing. You can see that people _______ it even more because of restrictions in recent years’ pandemic (流行病). That’s even more terrible in our cities, and we have to _______ that, no matter where you grow up, you have access to woodland and forests. We are lucky in Scotland that even in big cities there are green _______ close by for people to take advantage of. I love being able to bring people together and get them ________ about taking care of our forests in Scotland—it’s really energising.”

Working on the new Junior Forester Award has been a stand-out recent ________ for Eilidh. It gives children and young people some ________ into a career in forestry as well as the ________ ability to assist in woodland management in their schools and local communities.

She added, “The award is another way to ________ transferable skills in young people, and even if they don’t go into forestry as a career, they will always have knowledge about ________ the natural world.”
