In the home country, a common language gives you the ability to communicate easily with the people around you; and you learn something about your country’s history, people’s habits, likes and dislikes, customs and traditions. This understanding influences your own behavior, and what you expect of others.
Living abroad, it doesn’t take long to realize that many things don’t “work” the same, especially when moving from “the West” to “the East”. Besides a different language, each country has its own social system and laws and ways of solving problems. You will find some of them strange and alien. Sometimes you may feel uncomfortable because you realize that things are not the same as you think they are supposed to be. This is what has become known as “Culture Shock”.
Living in an environment with an unfamiliar(不熟悉的) culture can cause stress, anxiety or worse-mental or physical illness in some cases. Culture shock is the shock of experiencing an unknown or new culture. Cross-culture Adjustment is the period of anxiety, great pain and confusion suffered when entering a new culture. It can have effects on a person’s emotions and behavior. You should learn to accept and try to be used to different situations. One thing is certain: it is far easier to accept the new order of things than to try to change it.
Most Asian people can bear foreigners and accept their strange habits and behavior, not only because it might be to their benefit but out of natural politeness and restraint(克制) in front of others. Westerners should not make use of this. They must try to accept and obey local rules and rules of behavior.

One factor that contributes to this laid-back lifestyle is the culture of close family ties in Bali.In the Balinese culture, support is always available.Balinese extended families are so tightly knit that all members usually reside in the same complex.
Hinduism(印度教)is one of the main religions in Bali. The Balinese culture is based on a form of this religion, which is called “Hindu Dharma”.This religion reached the island during the eleventh century. Most of the family customs and traditions as well as community lifestyles of the Balinese people are influenced by this. The religious influence even expands widely into the arts, which makes Bali distinct(不同于) from the rest of Indonesia.
In spite of the fact that tourists flood to the island every year, the Balinese people have managed to conserve their culture.Almost every native of Bali is an artist in some form or another.Parents and villagers have passed on their skills to their children, who all seem to have inclinations (意愿) either to music, dance, painting, and decor.
Another remarkable mark of the Balinese culture is the series of ceremonies and rituals(仪式) known as the Manusa Yadnya. This marks the different stages of Balinese life.Cremation (火葬) is very popular on this island, and unlike in the West, death is a joyous and colorful event for the Balinese.

Everybody knows that different nationalities have their own special behavior when they go on holiday. But how differently would different nationalities behave? Psychologists created some tests to show the best and worst sides of tourists from four countries.
The Germans were the only group to send back a bottle of wine tasting of vinegar, the British did not mind when people jumped the queue, and the Japanese were so shocked when an actor began showering with nothing on that they turned their backs on him. The most upsetting thing for the Americans was finding someone had burned their flag.
There were also surprising reactions to a “drunk” coach driver. The British
were the least accepting and refused to get on the bus. The Japanese weren’t worried until their group leader noticed that the driver still had a bottle of alcohol. The Germans were by far the most understanding and did not want to complain in case the driver lost his job.
When the tourists had a free afternoon the British played football in the pouring rain, the Germans went walking, the Japanese hired a coach to go sight-seeing, and the Americans played pool (桌球).
In one situation an actor started smoking on a non-smoking bus. The British politely asked him to smoke outside, the Japanese were far more concerned with maintaining harmony and said nothing, the Germans had a vote and asked him to put it out, while the Americans were the least bothered, and actually started smoking themselves.
All four nationalities were equally accepting when they were served deliberately poor food. When an actor pretended to steal beer from the bar, the British and Americans were no better than each other and started to join in, the Germans refused to take part, while the Japanese were so horrified that they told the bar staff.
