It's every parent's worst nightmare. 【小题1】. Now scientists say they have found a better way to wake up sleeping youngsters. Researchers in the US have discovered that playing a child a recording of their mother's voice is about three times more likely to wake them than a traditional alarm. Moreover, they can escape more quickly.

Dr Gary Smith, a co-author of the research from the Nationwide Children's hospital in Ohio and his colleagues report how they compared the effects of four different smoke alarms on 176 children aged between 5 and 12 years old.【小题2】. While one alarm featured a high-pitched beep, the other three featured the voice of the child's mother calling either the child's name, giving instructions such as: “Wake up! Leave the room!”, or both. Each child slept in a lab-based room that resembled a real bedroom, and was shown how to escape from the room before they went to bed. They each experienced all four alarms—the order of which was chosen randomly.

【小题3】. About 90% of children woke for a vocal alarm compared with just over 53% for the traditional alarm. In addition, the children shook off their sleep faster, with a median(中位数) value of two seconds for the voice alarm compared with more than two and a half minutes for the traditional alarm.【小题4】

Prof Niamh Nic Daéid, director of the Leverhulme Research Centre at the University of Dundee, said the research supported by her team found a human voice combined with a low-frequency pulsing tone was far more effective in waking children than a traditional high-pitched alarm.【小题5】, which might have made them more responsive to an alarm, while more work was needed to explore whether other familiar sounds, such as a dog barking, might also prove effective in waking up children.

A.But she noted that the latest study involved children sleeping in a location other than their own bedroom
B.But she said it was important to look at developing better alarms
C.None of them had hearing difficulties or were taking any medication that affected their sleep
D.The results show that voice alarms appear to be more effective than high-pitched beeps
E.What's more, it does so faster and is linked to a quicker escape
F.There's a fire in the house; the alarms are beeping, but the children are in deep sleep
G.Similarly, escape times were longer in the cases of the beeping alarms

Many years ago,an experiment in education was carried out in secret at a school in England. The school had two classes for children of the same age.At the end of the school year an examination was held,in order to select the children for the classes of next year. However, the results of the exam were never made known. In secret, based on their performance in the exam, the higher performing and lower performing children were divided equally between the two classes.Only the headmaster and the psychologists knew the truth.Teachers for the next year were carefully selected for equal ability and experience.Even the classrooms were chosen with similar facilities(设备).Everything was made as equal as possible, except for one thing:one was called“Class A”,the other,“Class B”.

In everyone's minds the children in Class A were the clever ones, and the kids in Class B were not so clever. Some of the parents of the Class A children were pleasantly surprised that their children had done so well and rewarded them with presents and praise, while the parents of some of the Class B kids complained that their children did not work hard enough and took away some of their rewards.Even the teachers taught the Class B kids in a different manner, not expecting so much from them. For a whole year the illusion existed. Then there was another end of year exam.

The results were not surprising. The children of Class A performed so much better than those of Class B.In fact, the results were just as if they had been the top half chosen from last year's exam. They had become“Class A”children. And those in the other group, though equal the year before, had now become“Class B”kids. That was what they were told for a whole year, that was how they were treated, and that was what they believed—so that was what they became.

Kids getting addicted to smartphones or small devices probably make every parent worried as they have to struggle to get them to stop playing with them. Often, when parents take away the smartphone, these kids will get angry or cry.

A few days ago, citizens were amused when photos of a little girl with “panda eyes” spread on the Internet. Apparently, this was a trick played by the girl's parents as she was too addicted to her smartphone, and they wanted to break the habit.

When the girl was sleeping, the mother decided to secretly apply black eyeshadow around her daughter's eyes and it worked. “After waking up and seeing herself in the mirror, she screamed. I told her it's because she played on the phone so much,” said the mother. And the mother warned her not to play so much on the phone anymore.

It was reported that the incident had happened in Thailand and the photos spread quickly. Citizens were divided on this, with some of them feeling that it was a funny joke that would do no harm while some of them said that it was bad to do that for the kids. Some parents would try it on their kids, while some said they needed to be strict with their children's screen time.

However, Public Health of Malaysia has shared a post warning parents not to do so with their kids. They said that parents should rethink this joke as it could cause psychological scars to the kids. They explained that scaring your child with a joke could result in an experience that stayed in their long- term memory and this was not a good way to break a bad habit. It was up to the parents on how to teach and educate their children. Every parent has their own unique way of raising their children. These kids need to know about the effects, results, and responsibilities from their own actions.

Poor sleep and junk food contributes to poor performance at school among primary school children, a leading nutritional expert has warned. Her speech comes after a report showing that one in five Irish teachers has reported their young pupils are suffering from a lack (缺乏) of sleep and basic nutrition.

Nutritional expert Dee Daly, who runs classes teaching healthy eating habits for the whole family, said: “If you haven’t slept well, it affects your appetite (胃口) and you are more likely to reach for sugary foods and carbohydrates (碳水化合物). Studies in the US and UK have shown that this in turn creates difficulties in terms of behavior, concentration and performance in the classroom.”

An international study recently found that in Irish 22% of primary teachers reported their pupils were suffering from a lack of basic nutrition and 4% said this was completely limiting their teaching. And the study also found that about 66% of 10-year-old pupils in Irish were suffering from a lack of enough sleep, which is almost 14% above the international average in 60 countries.

TVs and computers in children's bedrooms are being blamed for sleep disturbance (干扰), with 54% of 10-year-olds here reporting that they have both in their rooms.

She recommends a combination of "sleep hygiene” and proper nutrition.

“Your bedroom should be like a bet cave-cool, dark and quiet. Blue light from computers, iPads and TV screens keeps your brain awake for longer and children shouldn't be texting under the covers on their mobile phones.”

She stresses the importance of creating a sleep pattern where children calm down before they go to bed and eat a proper breakfast with a balance of proteins and complex carbohydrates to set them up for school.
