“The goal is that every 300 metres if you open a window, you 【小题1】(see) green,” says Chen Lan, an expert in urban design and planning at Sichuan University.

With its mild weather, teahouses, quiet leafy streets and 【小题2】(international) known food, Chengdu in south-west China have been known as one of the country’s 【小题3】(good) cities to live in. Over the last two decades it has experienced a burst of rapid 【小题4】(grow), driven by Beijing’s “Go West” policy. In 1998 the city was home to 4.2 million people. “After several rounds of carrying bricks, our backs were beginning to blister, and after working for several days, our clothes were becoming 【小题8】 (wear),” a worker named Liang Wenfu said.

Engineers and workers live at the site in the middle of the reservoir. A boat delivers 【小题9】 (supply) of food, water and daily necessities once a week. One of the engineers, Cao Huibin, once stayed on site for 45 days in 【小题10】 row.
