Truman headed home from school, with the homework in mind, a report on beehives (蜂巢). Truman’s class had studied bees for three days, so he was ready. But, as his teacher Mrs. Lawrence had explained, to earn an A +,he needed a “new angle”.

Truman pushed open the front door to find his four-year-old brother, Bryan, sitting on the living room rag, hard at work. Paper towel tubes were all over the floor.

Bryan quickly stood up. “Truman, help me build a city!”

“I’d like to,” Truman replied, “but I have to do a report on beehives and ...”

“Can I help you?” Bryan begged.

“I don’t think so, Bry. Sorry.’’

“I know where there’s a beehive.” Bryan smiled.

“Where?”

“In the wood pile by the garage.’’

The boys marched to the firewood. Bending down, Bryan pointed out the hive deep inside the pile. Truman carefully removed the hive out.

“You got it!” Bryan shouted.

Back in the living room, Truman paced around, turning the fragile hive under his nose. Each cell was a perfect hexagon(六边形). How did the bees fit the cells together so neatly? And how did they make each cell six-sided? Could they count? Lost in thought, his foot came down on something ...

“Truman! You’re mining my city!”

“Get your stupid tubes out of here,Bryan! I’m trying to…”

The towel tubes on the floor suddenly reminded him of something. The beehive!

Looking closer, he noticed the tubes were arranged with one in the middle, surrounded by six others, just like the cells of the hive.

Just to be sure, he tried five and then seven tubes surrounding the center tubes, but neither way fit. Six was the only number that worked.

“Bees don’t count to six,” he said aloud. “The cells have to be six-sided.

Truman ran to Bryan and threw his arms around his brother. Bryan, you did it! Now I can build a model beehive with your tubes! I mean — if it’s O. K. with you.”

Jayce Crowder began noticing in kindergarten that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands. He had one. “It started when one boy teased him,” says his mother, Cortney Lewis. He'd return home with questions: Why am I different? Why me? Why? He actually said he was mad at God for making him that way,” his mother says. “That was a huge dagger to the heart.”

Lewis admits she didn't know what to do at that point. A few weeks later, Lewis came across a news story about Trashaun Willis, then 14, who had become an Internet sensation after posting videos of his slam dunks, and he was missing most of his left arm. Lewis called Jayce in. At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would merely be an inspiring moment for Jayce.

Had it stayed just that, Lewis would have been happy. But little did she know that her sister had already asked the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to build Jayce's confidence.

The boys met at Washington Middle School and instantly bonded. They rode bikes around the school's hallways and shot baskets. At one point, Trashaun did get serious with Jayce. He talked about their left arms. He told Jayce he was perfect the way God made him. He said not to let anyone drag him down and that words don't need to shake his confidence.

“It made me relieved,” says Lewis. Since that meeting, Lewis has seen a pronounced difference in her son. He recently started wrestling and loves it. “Meeting him”, she said, “made Jayce understand that there are others like him.” As for Trashaun, his relationship with Jayce made him look forward to helping more kids. “It means a lot to know that I changed Jayce's life,” Trashaun said.

He certainly did.

“Beauty isn't about having a pretty face,” begins a motivational quote. “It's about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart, and a pretty soul. Oh, and pretty nails!”

That may be Angela Peters' motto. Last July, Peters, rolled her wheelchair into a nail salon (沙龙) at the Walmart shopping center in Burton to have her nails done. But Peters, who has cerebral palsy (脑瘫), was turned away. The salon told her that they were afraid it would be too difficult to properly paint her nails given that her hands kept shaking. What was meant to be a day of beauty for Peters was now a disappointment.

A Walmart cashier about to go on her break happened to see this. Ebony Harris recognized Peters as a Walmart regular. “She's just like everyone else. She wants to look pretty. So why can't she?” Harris said.

Harris approached Peters. “Do you want me to do your nails?” she asked.

A smile spread across Peters' face. “Yeah!” Harris led Peters into the supermarket, where they shopped for nail polish. They settled on a color that would catch every eye. They then made their way into a neighboring Subway, found a table for two, and started. Harris gently took Peters' hand into hers and carefully began painting her nails. “She moved her hands a little bit, and she kept saying she was sorry,” Harris said. “I told her, ‘Don't say that. You're fine.’ She makes me look at life and appreciate it much more than I have.”

Watching it all with surprise and admiration was Subway employee Tasia Smith. Smith was so taken by the scene that she wrote about it on Facebook. “She was so patient with her,” she wrote. “Thanks to the Walmart worker for making this beautiful girl's day!”

For many years, our next-door neighbor's house was a terrible mess. It would be impossible to describe the awful smells of her house. The health department came and shut down an illegal puppy mill (幼犬繁育场) in the house a few years ago.

The house was sold for a rather high price because of the good location of the neighborhood. My husband and I looked into the house at that time and were upset by the scene: black mold (霉菌) growing on the walls; cigarette ends all over the floor; the wall between the garage and the living room completely destroyed by water damage. We couldn't spend more than one second in the house before running away.

We thought that it would be a teardown, but the new owners set about cleaning the inside. They worked for months making it safe and livable. After everything was clean and tidy, the owners decided to resell the house for a higher price.

Yesterday while I was out in my yard, a potential (潜在的) buyer pulled up and asked me what I could tell her about the history of the house. I just said that I didn't know anything.

What is my ethical obligation (道德义务) in this situation? It's possible that they have removed all the awful smells, dangerous mold and that the house is safe and livable. But it's also possible that they have just structurally fixed the house and that some unsafe mold will take root in the future. I wouldn't personally live there knowing what I know. But really, it's none of my business, and given the choice, I wouldn't talk to anyone about what I know. While it feels like a lie not to answer a direct question, I also feel that it's not my place to potentially ruin the seller's business deal. If I am asked again, what should I say?

【小题1】What can be learned about the author's neighborhood?
A.It's nice.B.It's noisy.
C.It's wealthy.D.It's crowded.
【小题2】Why did the new owners give the house a thorough cleaning?
A.To move into it.
B.To please the neighbors.
C.To get it ready for resale.
D.To make it match the surrounding area.
【小题3】How did the author feel after saying she knew nothing about the house's history?
A.Sad.B.Troubled.C.Relaxed.D.Proud.
【小题4】Why does the author write the text?
A.To offer help.B.To ask for advice.
C.To make a complaint.D.To give an explanation.
