A 52-year-old man, who spent most of his life sleeping in the park and selling copies of the Big Issue magazine 【小题1】 (help) the homeless, has enrolled(登记)at Britain’s illustrious Cambridge University.
Geoff Edwards left school 【小题2】 a young age with two qualifications and few ambitions, then ended up homeless in the city of Cambridge after work as a field laborer dried up.
The number of homeless people in Britain 【小题3】 (rise) past 300,000 so far – an increase of 4 per cent on last year. Mr. Edwards said 【小题4】 (sell) the Big Issue – a magazine founded in 1991 to help the homeless earn 【小题5】 living – had helped give him back “a bit of self-respect”.
Now Edwards is studying English literature, having completed a college course designed for adults 【小题6】 want to return to education or need extra qualifications to go on to university.
“I didn’t think of applying to Cambridge – I didn’t think Cambridge University would take someone like me, 【小题7】 my tutor encouraged me to apply,” Mr. Edwards said in a statement. “It’s the first thing I am proud of in my life. Going to Cambridge University was a dream of 【小题8】 (me), for it is one of the top 【小题9】 (university) in the world.”
