Until 1954 it was thought that no man could run one mile in less than four minutes. As years _______ , the record came closer and closer to four minutes and Roger Bannister, a young English _______ , began to believe he might _______ this almost magic barrier.

It was a cold afternoon on May 6th, 1954, when Bannister knew he had a _______ chance. Bannister had been _______ hard and was very fit, but the weather conditions were a real _______ to him. Describing the _______ later, Bannister said, “On the way to the track the wind blew strongly. As I _______ for the start I glanced at the flag. It moved _______ now. This was the moment when I made my decision.”

“The gun fired. My legs ________ to meet no resistance, as if I was ________ forward by some unknown force. The noise from the faithful ________ gave me greater strength. I felt the ________ of a lifetime had come.”

“I was driven on by a ________ of fear and pride. My body had long since used up all its energy ________ it went on running just the same. This was the critical moment when my legs were strong enough to carry me over the last few yards as they ________ could have done in previous years. When I leapt at (冲向) the ________ tape, I fell, almost ________ .”

“I knew I had done it, even before I ________ the time. The announcement came. ‘Result of the one mile...Time, three minutes...’ the rest was ________ in the noise of excitement.”

I think I will never forget the special day in November. It was hotter than normal. This was the ______ my father and I had waited so long for, because we had been working towards this race for three years. Dozens of familiar faces from church and school flashed across my view. They had come ______ me. I saw worry and ______ on my father’s face. Then the race began!

For the first two and a half miles, I felt ______. I had never before been so ready for something. The weeks leading up to the race were filled with controlled ______ and a strict diet. My friends hadn’t seen me in weeks, but they understood the ______required to make my dream a reality. As in all of my races，I didn’t ______ out in the front. I loved the pleasure of passing people as my strength overtook their premature speed.

Then without warning，my strength began to decrease. Neck and neck with one of my greatest competitors, I ______ see the finish line. I had begun the final dash into ______ when my knees became weak and my legs gave way. Nothing I could do would make them ______ weight.

I watched as runners rushed by me. ______ I knew my dreams of victory were destroyed, I had to finish the race. However, my legs hurt badly. With all of the ______ left in me, I got on my hands and knees and crawled (爬), inch by inch, across the finish line. Voices, both ______ and familiar, cheered me on. They gave me the courage to keep ______ until the very end.

The doctors were there in seconds, but my eyes searched the crowd for him. There was only one person I wanted to ______ to. I whispered, “I’ m so sorry, Dad, I'm so sorry I ______ you.” He looked at me, saying, “You could never disappoint me. Sometimes these things just ______. All that matters is that you did your best.”

“But we worked so ______. What about our dream?” He reached over for my hand and said, “Don’ t you know that you are my dream and it has come true?”

It wasn’t long before my running shoes were back on, marking a ______ path for my journey. I learned that all of the miles, the tears, the sweat, and the pain my dad and I experienced together were not for a ______. What I realized, though, was that to him, I was the greatest prize he had ever won.

In the spring of 1977, Rick Hoyt told his father, Dick that he wanted to participate in a 5-mile benefit run. Far from being a long-distance runner, Dick _________ to push Rick in his wheelchair and they finished all 5 miles, coming in next to last. That night, Rick told his father, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not _________.”

This _________ was just the beginning of what would become over 1,000 races _________. The 2009 Boston Marathon was officially Team Hoyt’s 1000th race. Rick always says if it comes down to doing one _________ a year he would like it to be the Boston Marathon: his _________ race.

2013 was going to be Team Hoyt’s last Boston Marathon together, but they were not able to finish due to the terrorist bombing at the finish line. They _________ to be back in 2014 to finish the race with all the other runners, which they did, _________ many times along the 26.2 distance to take photos and shake hands of the many well-wishers.

Dick and Rick will continue to do shorter distances races together, but teammate Bryan Lyons will be _________in pushing Rick in the 2015 Boston.

Rick was once __________, if he could give his father one thing, what would it be? Rick responded, “The thing I’d most like is for my dad to sit in the chair and I would __________ him for once.”

Racing in support of others less fortunate, devoting their time and energy to __________ others, Team Hoyt continued in that same __________ for 37 years. They proved to everyone that anything can be done with enough __________, devotion, and above all, the bottomless depths of __________ that can be found only in the unique bond between a father and his son.
