There is no doubt that the United States has entered a brand new age, because Donald Trump, the country’s 45th president, is very different from any president before him.

Unlike Hillary Clinton, his opponent, and most former US presidents, who entered the election after years of being politicians, Trump, 70, was a New York real estate businessman.

And he was not a presidential candidate who worked hard to keep a perfect public image of a man who was always caring, fair and wise.

Instead, Trump is famous for being bad-tempered, arrogant(傲慢的) and hateful toward those who disagree with him. He also hates immigrants, both from Latin America and the Middle East, for many problems in the US. This has caused a dangerous division in the country—a country made up of many various races.

But to his supporters, the fact that Trump is not a typical politician is actually one of his advantages. His habit of never hiding his opinions is also considered by many to be a sign that he is not a hypocrite like many politicians are.

“We have seen our country take a downturn in the eyes of the world. We need to go in a different direction, ” Binyomin Weisswasser, 39, a man from Chicago, told the Chicago Tribune. “Trump’s not a politician... I like that he is not always politically correct and speaks his mind. It gives me the feeling that what you see is what you get. You may not like it, but you know what it is.”

But interestingly, many who elected Trump actually followed the “lesser of two evils” principle—one that people use when faced with picking from two unpleasant options—simply because they didn’t think Clinton was a better choice.

“He’s the candidate I disagree less with, ” Jack Stucky, 20, a student at Norwestern University, told the Chicago Tribune. “I don’t think I’d say Donald Trump is going to be the best president ever, but I did think he’d be better than Hillary Clinton.”

It’s true that the US is entering a new age. It’s just not clear yet what kind of age it’s going to be.

Reviews for Top Gun 2: Maverick

Comments on Downton Abbey II: A New Era

9/10
Beautiful!

What a masterpiece! I’m a fan from the series and I must admit that seeing the cast all together for all these years so happy and cheerful is a true blessing and we all must be so grateful. I went to the Movie Theater today and everyone was enjoying so much! People were always laughing at Maggie’s jokes and commenting on each scene... it’s pure excitement. I have no words to describe my love for Downton Abbey.

Mild

Downton Abbey: A New Era is simple escapism. The script emphasizes quantity over quality, parading numerous trivial plotlines rather than digging into any particular idea. Characters are hollowly pleasant because, ultimately, nothing is consequential. Easy entertainment has its audience, but some viewers might want tonal range, character depth, strong themes, or significant tension. The acting is charming enough and the soapy plot keeps moving, but Downton Abbey is more of a getaway than a journey.

Tired of fading characters

I loved the Downton Abbey series and have rewatched them during lockdown. The delightful fizz of the early series gradually began to fade out as they went on but they held us enraptured because we were invested in the characters.
Roll on the show through two movies and it’s obvious that both the characters and the franchise have run out of steam. This is a plot which ultimately goes precisely nowhere, so that we’re left with a trip in the south of France (without the scenery) and a filmwithinafilm back at the house.

Film has properties that set it apart from painting, sculpture, novels, and plays. It is also, in its most popular and powerful form, a story telling medium that shares many elements with the short story and the novel. And since film presents its stories in dramatic form, it has even more in common with the stage play: Both plays and movies act out or dramatize, show rather than tell, what happens.

Unlike the novel, short story, or play, however, film is not handy to study; it cannot be effectively frozen on the printed page. The novel and short story are relatively easy to study because they are written to be read. The stage play is slightly more difficult to study because it is written to be performed. But plays are printed, and because they rely heavily on the spoken word, imaginative readers can conjure up at least a pale imitation of the experience they might have been watching a performance on stage. This cannot be said of the screenplay, for a film depends greatly on visual and other nonvisual elements that are not easily expressed in writing. The screenplay requires so much “filling in” by our imagination that we cannot really approximate the experience of a film by reading a screenplay, and reading a screenplay is worthwhile only if we have already seen the film. Thus, most screenplays are published not to read but rather to be remembered.

Still, film should not be ignored because studying it requires extra effort. And the fact that we do not generally “read” films does not mean we should ignore the principles of literary or dramatic analysis when we see a film. Literature and films do share many elements and communicate many things in similar ways. Perceptive film analysis rests on the principles used in literary analysis, and if we apply what we have learned in the study of literature to our analysis of films, we will be far ahead of those who do not. Therefore, before we turn to the unique elements of film, we need to look into the elements that film shares with any good story.

Dividing film into its various elements for analysis is a somewhat artificial process, for the elements of any art form, never exist in isolation. It is impossible, for example, to isolate plot from character: Events influence people, and people influence events; the two are always closely interwoven in any fictional, dramatic, or cinematic work. Nevertheless, the analytical method uses such a fragmenting technique for ease and convenience. But it does so with the assumption that we can study these elements in isolation without losing sight of their interdependence or their relationship to the whole.

【小题1】What is mainly discussed in the text?
A.The uniqueness of film.
B.The importance of film analysis.

【小题3】From the third paragraph we learn that ________.
A.the means by which we analyze a literary work cannot be applied to the analysis of the film
B.a good film and a good story have many elements in common
C.we should not pay extra effort to study films
D.using the principles of literary analysis makes no difference in film analysis
【小题4】Why can’t we divide film into various elements for analysis?
A.Because these elements are interwoven with each other and cannot be separated.
B.Because films cannot be written down and it is inconvenient to analyze them.
C.Because films elements are too complicated.
D.Because films need not to be analyzed in detail.

Liverpool, my hometown, is a special city. It is so unique that in 2004 it became a World Heritage(遗产)Site.

I recently returned to my home city and my first stop was at a museum on the River Mersey. Blanketed in mist (薄雾), Victorian architecture rose from the banks of the river, responded to the sounds of sea-birds, and appeared unbelievably charming. When I headed toward the centre, I found myself surrounded by buildings that mirror the best palaces of Europe. It is not hard to imagine why, on first seeing the city, most visitors would be overpowered by the beauty of the noble buildings, which are solid signs of Liverpool’s history.

As if stress its cultural role, Liverpool has more museums and galleries  than most cities in Britain. At Walker Art Gallery, I was told that it has best collections of Victorian paintings in the world, and is the home of modern art in the north of England. However, culture is more than galleries. Liverpool offers many music events. As Britain’s No.1 music city, it has the biggest city music festival in Europe, and its musicians are famous all over the world. Liverpool is also well-known for its football and other sports events. Every year, the Mersey River Festival attracts thousands of visitors, madding the city a place of wonder.

As you would expect from such a city, there are restaurants serving food from around the world. When my trip was about to complete, I chose to rest my legs in Liverpool’s famous Philharmonic pub (酒馆). It is a monument to perfection, and a heritage attraction itself.

Being a World Heritage Site, my home city is certainly a place of “outstanding universal value”. It is a treasure house with plenty of secrets for the world to explore.
